79 930 fuel pump reality check

If I understand the various posts, the front fuel pump should make a whurring sound when the key is turned to the position before the starter cranks like my 71 911 E with Weber conversion.
Am i correct in my assumption?
Or, does it run only after the starter is energized? If this is the case, how does one hear if it is running or not?
My reason for all this is that I have a no start situation as of a couple hours ago after a 40 mile run yesterday. Has often been a hard starter after driving for awhile but never a cold start problem.
My game plan is to clean the fuse and relay contacts. If nothing happens, I have a new relay to try. After that if nothing happens I,m not sure which direction to take.

The fuel pump(s) activate when the metering plate senses vacuum and deflects as a result of the engine turning over. The fuel distributor/metering plate has a switch internally that activates as a result of the metering plate moving on its fulcrum.

Disconnect the green plug on the top-backside of fuel distributor, turn the ignition to 'on'....you should then hear the fuel pumps running. Avoid pushing on the metering plate with the ignition on This causes raw fuel to be dumped into the intake runners via the injectors.
