HP potential with stock turbo?

Hello guys and gals. I'm a newbie to the Porsche forums. I was wondering what the maximum HP potential is for a stock turbo on an 89 cab, along with all the supporting mods. Thanks!

Welcome!
Please explain "stock turbo".
With enough money there is no max HP limit. The typical plateau is ~400WHP with CIS and then ~500WHP with EFI. Going to 600+HP requires much effort and cash.

Well my father has an 89 turbo cabriolet that he had modded at Rothsport in Portland Oregon. Total there was about 30-35k invested into building the motor, mild suspension, and upgraded brakes. Their goal was a bullit proof engine with as much power as possible, I think they used the stock turbo but not sure. Just wondering how much hp it actually makes because I don't believe it has been dynoed. Sorry I dont have much info other than that.

Without specifics it is impossible to say. Some shops charge $25,000 just to rebuild a stock engine. OEM parts are quite expensive.
As stated above, if your father's car retains the CIS the typical plateau is ~400WHP. If the engine was converted to EFI then possibly 500+WHP.
The stock turbo was not retained if this was a performance build. That is one clue.

Are you asking about the stock "turbocharger" that comes on your 89 Turbo 911 Cab?

Ya I was referring to the stock turbo on his 89 cab 5 speed. I'm pretty sure it's still the stock turbo, not certain though. You would think not. I'll get more info soon. Thanks for the replies!

The stock turbo for an '89 is the 3LDZ. You will see that on the tag attached to the turbo.
The most likely upgraded turbo used would be a K27-7200 or K27-7006 if an older conversion. Garretts and others have become popular more recently.

Brian, Have you seen this combo and have any data?

It is only a guess but starting at stock with about 280hp I would think about 5-15hp for a sport muffler, 10-15 hp for .9 bar boost. Maybe another 10-20hp for a better intercooler. If SC cams another 10hp maybe. Headers, 10hp or a bit more on an 89. Again, only a guess.

After changing out the muffler changing out the turbo would probably be the next best candidate to be changed if looking for less lag and more HP. I suspect the stock turbo is not very efficient much past 300chp.

I do have a few clients who chose to stay with the 3LDZ. The 3LDZ will respond to mods of course and lag is much reduced with headers and muffler. I don't know what the power limit is on the 3LDZ but do plan to plug one into my setup for baseline purposes to see.

The '89 engine will gain less with the same mods as say a '78 CA engine because the baseline is not the same; the end results however are the same. Typical bolt-ons and tuning will get both engines easily to 375WHP.
