Tow hooks

So just exactly how do these things work? I don't have one, but if it makes towing easier, then I must have one!

Hey Mark,
My tow hook simply screws into the threaded port in my rear bumper, don't know what that spring & long hook type is for or from? Did that come in your factory tool kit???

The problem is that I don't have a tool kit, other than what I've put together (my car was sans the tool kit when I bought it). I've seen these tow hooks pop up now and then on evilbay (that's where this one is currently at). It would be nice to have a hook up front for that rare occasion when you have to get towed home via a strap (BTDT...it's a little risky on messing up the air dam). Rear hook....that's cool, but I don't relish being towed in reverse.
I must be missing something here. Thanks for the response.

I think thats for a "longhood" 911 up to '73. Never heard of that being used on a '74 or later with the heavy and relatively ugly 5mph impact bumpers and gas shocks.

I may be all wrong on that.. but to me it doesn't look like it could safely pull anything bigger than a lawn mower.

mark houghton 08-23-2010 10:57 AM

Thanks Jim, that explains it. I couldn't see any provision on a 930 where this type of hook could possibly work anyway. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a "must have" tool.

Gimp,

If you ever put that K27 7200 on there you would never have to tow it.

Some cars had a hole with a plug front and rear. The tow hook slipped in and hooked on a slot in the bumper bracket (behind the bumper). My wife's MB's had it.

Later model 964 cars had tow hooks that screwed in IIRC.

Bite me oh venerable Old One!

First, I need to borrow a slide hammer from work to slam out the axle shafts in my truck's front differential - to replace a bad bearing. Then, the 7200 goes in to replace the 7006 in the 930. Getting closer every month and maybe....just maybe...will do a comparison drive before the snow falls.

Oh, I've also got several hundred feet of fence to install to keep my little doggies from terrorizing the neighborhood. There I was one early morning, scantily clad whilst getting ready for work when a cop knocks on my door to tell me that some bit$h complained about my sweet Goldens barking at her as she jogged past the front of the house (what did she expect - something about running prey and wolf instincts). Mind you, the dogs do their barking from the edge of the yard. So, now this has become a priority so I don't have to watch them so closely. This way I can save my money for a 'get out of jail' card for reasons other than dog issues...such as being hauled in for high speed reckless driving charges when my turbo accidentally sticks open.

cole930 08-23-2010 09:07 PM

Tell the cop it is natural for dogs to bark and to kiss your as-, when the dogs are off the property and bite the b---- he can come back.

I had to stay away from the neighbor hoods, too many of someone else's rules, I've been told I don't play well with others. I have 5 acres, a long drive, a sawed off 12 Ga. and Gracie. People that don't know Gracie won't even get out of their cars. Works fine for me, I have all the friends I need already.

Get the damn fence done, tow the 930 behind the truck and get out here, bring the dogs so they can place with Grace and we can do both the bearing and the turbo at the same time. You'd probably break a leg doing it by yourself anyway.

Too bad I don't still live in the Chicago area, or I would take you up on the offer. Besides, I couldn't tow the car your way because I don't have a tow hook.;)

As to the dogs and cops and those silly tree-huggers that seem to feel my neighborhood is a jogging grounds - well, they can just about stuff it where the sun don't shine. I'm on 1.5 acres in what would be considered "country living', thus the draw for people to lumber down the street. So I guess to be a good neighbor I install some fencing (320 feet worth - money that could be better spent on something like an EFI conversion). Never fenced my dogs in before, but it may be worth the piece of mind. I don't play too well with neighbors either....they just seem to get in the way most times and don't understand my idiocyncracies.

The 930 continues to run well, even with that top-end loving 7006. I am anxious to see the shift in power curve with the 7200, though. When I get her done I'll post my impressions.

cole930 08-24-2010 08:37 PM

Now that takes the cake. Who chimes in but the "On the road with Charles Karualt Kid" Man isn't at home long enough to even feed his dog, has to take the poor dog with him. Every time you ask how the car is coming he says " I don't have it done, I've been on the road". You ever hear about Pot, Kettle, Black.

Oops !!!! now some Ovomit lover will probably accuse me of being racist, ah, I'll just tell em to blame Bush

Cole

mark houghton 08-24-2010 08:57 PM

God I just love how these innocent threads seem to morph into a life of their own. From tow hooks to toe heads to a dog's right to dump in their own yard to vomiting leaders.

This is what keeps me coming back to the forum...the brotherly love and in-your-face commraderie. I think...I know...that some of my best friends reside here. Where would we be without the age of the internet. Probably still dicking around with our slide rules and snail mail and buried in our own little sandboxes. And in between the fun, we're sharing just a little bit of what we've learned about our shared pashions.

Now careful, Cole, you live in Indiana (so sorry to hear that). I live in Washington, and all we do is hug trees and profess to be "green" (the meaning of the word being lost some time ago). Ceptn' I aint got no stinkin' trees here in the desert part of the state, so that makes me like...oh, I don't know...a camel jockey I guess. Oops...no racial profiling intended.

9dreizig 08-24-2010 10:12 PM

Hey Cole that's why I have two. So one is always running!
And Sophie says hi (she's right here beside me)

cole930 08-25-2010 12:14 PM

Gimp,

Ya, Indiana really sucks, I mean just think about it ...... We all still proudly fly our beloved countrie's flag, we say the Pledge of Allegiance at every sporting event and local ball game, including Little League. On Memorial Day everyone turns out for the local American Legion flag ceremony on the court square and recite The Lords Prayer in unison to honor our fallen. We still know all our neighbors by their first name and we're one of 2-3 states in the Union that has a surplus of a Billion dollars in our treasury.

Just thing of it, were are so out of touch with the mainstream we still
think being an American is something to be really proud of.

Love you Bums..... Give Sophie girl some pets for us !!!!!

Cole
