930s bhp compaired to 930

Hi all

Just a question

I was recently reading a book about distinguishing the differences in 911's. It says that the 86-89 930s or 930se(euro)(slantnose version came with 330 bhp as apposed to the standard 282bhp(US) or 300(euro)in the 911 turbo. Is this a true statement..it says the 930s' had larger turbos and other small differences. And would this also be 330bhp euro or US figures.

Thanks
Chris

My understanding is that the bigger difference is in torque. I have seen a torque chart with over 400 ft/pounds coming from a stock euro 3.3, not positive if it was the 'S'. Some of the later 80s euro engines were pretty healthy. The 330 is defintely euro.

Yeah, there was a page on the PorscheClubGB web site somewhere (sorry, I've lost the link) listing the difference between the 3.3 930 and 1989 SE (which may or may not be a slope-nose).

Slightly bigger intercooler which required the re-circ valve / BOV stuff to be changed. As you can see from this photo, it (the I/C) is deeper than standard:

Also the K27-7006 turbocharger and Cams if I remember correctly

The slant noses had the optional factory "performance package" that boosted performance to around 330 BHP. Some pontoon fender cars had it, but damn near all slants got it.

Yeah, you're right - most do have slants - and this gets them an extra... Wait for it, wait for it.. 2mph top speed (170 instead of 168mph).

This SE ("Special Equipment" or something like that) was a slant, but I've seen SEs that don't think they're 944s in disguise!

They still have the grills in the front of the rear wheel arches - and, if I'm not mistaken, the running boards down the side

"Pontoon fenders" = slang I picked up from god knows where for the classic 911 fenders I actually like. Slant do not appeal to me.

Ok I call them bug eyes I am not a huge fan of slant fenders either unless of course they are attached to a Kremer K3 935.

I was originally a big fan of the "bug eye" porsches' but I have to say, my 930 slant has really grown on me. I have a different intercooler and turbo on it, but thats what it had when I bought it. Kokeln intercooler and K27 7200 turbo currently on it, and it doesn't have the 4 outlet exhaust pipes, just an aftermarket unit(I thinks it a B&B with 2 exhaust pipes). It would have been nice to know if it does have the "performance package" but really I was just curious. To all that posted pics with your message...very nice rides!!

Thanks again

Chris

If its a factory slant, I would bet dollars to donuts you have the extra power. The slant was an expensive option on top of an already high end car. If the customer went to the trouble of adding the slant conversion, they added the power as well.

Yes it is a factory slant..89 to boot! Says M505 on the front hood sticker. It sure feels like it has more than 280hp..but then again, how do you compare..power to weight ratio can really throw you off.

The Sonderwunsch Slantnose option (SOW010) for the slantnose was a 38,340DM option in the mid 80's and the High Output 330BHP Engine option(SOW020) was 20,975DM. A very hefty price tag for 30 more Brake Horsepower. Granted, there were additional pieces included with the engine option, but still.....

Keep in mind the engines were not certified to pass EPA reg's so they would have to go through the EPA\Customs Federalization when they came into this country...i.e. smog'd.

Optional Euro Engine

Chris-
All M505 cars were built with the same engine/transmission as the US spec 930 Turbo (282bhp) of the same model year. The M506 was the European version of the Slantnose pkg and came standard with the euro 930 Turbo (300bhp) engine. Most European customers also opted for the "Performance Increase" option for their M506 and their predecessors built at the Werke1 Special Wishes department in Zuffenhausen. The optional engine (Europe only) was conservatively rated at 330 bhp but evidence showed that most would dyno from the factory at around 350 to 375 bhp.

no, as I understood the US cars got the extra power option, but also had all the garbage emissions gear. But I am not an uber-guru on the differences.
