ceramic exhaust ports

Does anyone know if the 91 c2 turbo had ceramic inserts in the exhaust ports? I ask because the turbine wheel is damaged on my car yet the car was running fine, no smoke good idle etc. I'm going to do a leakdown to be sure nothing is radically wrong.

No it does not have ceramic inserts, hope it turns out ok. you may want to remove the exhaust syst. and look it over closely.

Almost forgot, If you still have the air injectors in the exhaust ports check those as well for any missing pieces.

Thanks, I hope it's something downwind of the exhaust ports!

Factory or aftermarket headers?

RS,
My turbine wheel had damage too. I suspected the air injector nozzles because there was very little left of them in the exhaust ports.

I have since removed the air system and plugged the ports.

Stock headers but straight pipes after no muffler or cat.
Mark, so there was no other damage to your car except the air injectors? I really don't want a teardown right now.

We're going to pull the air injectors. Will this give a check engine error? I wouldn't think so since I'm not running a cat and didn't get any errors when I did that.

RS,
Here is the damage to my rotor, there was some pitting in the hot side casing too.

Here is a shot looking into the exhaust ports. The port on the left shows the air injector nozzle is about gone, the others are in stages of destruction.

I'm fully healed now. Good luck with yours.

Mark

No it will not illuminate a CEL, The control unit in your car does not have this capability , Recommend you set the system to run open loop and adjust to match,Hope everything works out!

Could be the air injectors, but also keep in mind that any carbon breaking up in the combustion chamber or port will impact the turbine blades at speed. There's a lot of kinetic energy in a turbine blade spinning upwards of 100,000RPM.

I'm waiting on a turbine, KKK is out of stock and it will be a few days to get one in. I just want to make sure that we find the problem before we put the rebuilt turbo in. I sure hope its just the injectors. Our thought was that carbon could not damage the turbine in that way. The fans are pretty stout, but we'll see. I haven't a picture of the wheel as it was taken apart at the turbo rebuild shop, but he called to say it was pretty bad. Probably a lot like yours Mark.

RS,
I replaced the center "cartridge" of my turbo because KKK was out of stock when I needed one too. It is less expensive and comes pre-balanced, so it bolts right in.

Good Luck,
Mark

Lou and Mark, Thanks for your spot on diagnosis. Two of the air injection nozzles had lost their tips. We removed and plugged. We got the turbo back after 6 weeks, both cartridges and wheels were out of stock. Mark, my impeller looks just about like your picture. It should be up and running later today.
Thanks to all for your input. I highly recommend that everyone either remove and plug your air injectors or change nozzles every 50,000 miles.
