I used my set of Mahles and should have used these - they are WAY better, esp the cylinders, what a robust piece of work!

I may be interested in these as well. My current set of pistons and cylinders are .004 out of round.

These look very very well made and I have been trying to decide between these and the mahle set.

While I haven't heard of any bad experiences or anything negative for that matter with these cylinders. A few people I have asked their opinion on these say to go with the mahle. (these being engine builders, machinists, etc.)

The strange thing though, is no one can give me definitive answer as to why.

Maybe that's why you used the mahle too?

Can you or anyone shed some light on this topic of Mahle vs Nickies.

I was told the same thing, so I called JE pistons. I spoke with one of their chief engineers who said that the Mahle pistons have a very high degree of offset and that JE cannot duplicate this offset without running into structure problems. Also, the piston to wall clearance on the Mahle is quite tight. He mentioned a new JE forging that is out now which allows tighter piston to wall clearances but still not as tight as the Mahle's. So I went for the new Mahles.

IMO the Nickies are better made, appear thicker and have better cooling.
The JEs look every bit as good and refined as a Mahle piston - plus, for fun, price out a set of 7.5 98mm Mahles....around $5400.

These are less than wholesale.

I went with 100mm Nickies and JE pistons on my build. Full retail on the Nickies/JE set is similar to the price of the OEM Mahles with the half-finned cylinders. 98mm 3.4 Mahle motorsport kit is $5700...not even sure if you can get 100mm Mahles (not listed on Pelican at the moment)

Everything I've read about clearance issues with JE pistons is when they are matched with Mahle cylinders...due to different expansion rates in the aluminum alloys people run larger clearances. Supposedly the LN cylinders are designed to have an expansion rate compatible with the JE pistons (if you believe the website).

I bought mine from Chris Carrol at Turbokraft. He endorsed them and said he uses them on Turbokraft built engines frequently. I got nicely crafted parts, made in the USA, and I saved over $1500 vs. the Mahles...pretty much a no brainer for me.

97M is clear on the inside of the piston.
Are they 97mm or 98mm pistons?

I was going to use my short skirt 98mm Mahle's and had my cylinders replated for them. Then I realized the compression was lower than what I wanted so I bought JE's. Per EBS I used them in the replated cylinders with the same clearance as the Mahle's. No problems so far. The JE's are significantly lighter too.

That is a forging number, the 97. They are 98mm P&Cs.

Looking at the piston there appears to be 4 machined grooves in the outer diameter between the top ring land and the piston top surface. Also looks like a deep groove in the area between the top ring land and second ring land.
Is this correct or is it machining marks or optical illusion?
Please provide more details on the piston and what this is.
Also, are these supplied with standard OEM Goetze rings or what optional rings are included?

Fred,

My JE piston set has the same grooves. They are not optical illusions. AFAIK, those are anti detonation grooves. As you may also notice, the skirts are coated. LN engineering's website may have some additional info describing the features of the JE pistons they spec in their P&C sets. I believe LN normally sells the pistons with OEM Goetze rings, but there are other options.

I do not understand it but read on on race article that an increased cylinder to piston clearance is one factor that can help increase TQ.
