catalytic converter required for UK /Euro usage?

Can anyone confirm if a Catalytic converter IS or is NOT required for a European 930 in the UK or France?
Did they originally come with converters?
- Do the Fabspeed mufflers (sold on PP) or RarlyL8 mufflers fit to Cat (fitted) cars? or non cat cars?
- I am just about to plunge and fit a new muffler and need to find out if I need a cat bypass pipe or if the mufflers suggested take care of that gap?
Plus if I can get away with no Cat in Europe (for road test purposes)
I also have the difficulty that I am now in France/Italy and the car is in the UK with engine dropped out of the car.
Any help appreciated
regards
Ben

I think I may be able to shed more light on my car as it is an 87 930 but from Japan.
I believe Japan has higher emissions restrictions than Europe and so it was probably fitted with a Cat Converter when imported.
I have attached pics to show exhausts.

I know it does not show the cat converter closely but these are the only pics I have currently.
If anyone has documents to confirm that only the Japanese and maybe USA models had Cat converters as standard, this might answer my question of whether the Euro version does not need one
Many thanks

In the UK, you are only held to the original emissions standards that applied at time of manufacture, and OEM visual inspection is not an issue.

My 1978 RoW 930/60 never originally had a cat and breezed a Brit MOT, even with factory RoW idle specs (nice fat CO2).

Japan and US were the most restrictive markets. I know my RoW exhaust is a later style than my motor (separate wastegate muffler) and it doesn't have any provision for a cat.

I believe Canada has a requirement to import the US model if available, but can import the RoW model if not - thus they imported RoW 930's when the US wasn't getting any...

Thanks spuggy
guess I will be ditching the cat converter and getting a free flowing muffler!
Will have to check later if there is a wastegate muffler and if so ditch that aswell?
Cheers
Ben

I can see the end of your wastegate muffler in the shot with the rear valance visible... :)

Don't ditch it, some folks want to put them on (Dave from TRE was looking for one a month or two ago), and they're very expensive from Porsche (just for larfs I had Guildford OPC look it up whilst ordering parts - I was quoted 1800 GBP 3+ years ago).

But yes, a dump pipe would be better for power. You won't fail any tests until the waste gate opens - and then it's pretty much "go to jail" time anyway... :)

Thanks for the tip on the waste gate muffler - may hang onto it for the meantime - but the mufflers on order

cheers
