Dismantling wastegate
I have a stock WG and I'm trying to pull the valve seat plate off it. It should just drop out - I think. I've done this before on another stock WG and it was just sealed in with the same gasket as on the other side - ie the base of the J pipe.
This unit almost seems to have the plate welded on. Do they use some type of sealant on some of these during rebuilds or something. If so, how to remove it. I've even tried heating with oxy acetylene. I'm at the point of worrying about busting something. The studs are near wasted and I want to replace them before they snap. But I can't figure why it should be so hard to get the valve seat plate off. Anyone else struck this? Thx Alan

Alan,
The valve seat is pulled into place inside the casting during installation onto the exhaust. There is a small lip on the seat that protrudes into the casting. ![]() If there is no gasket between the two and they will become almost welded together sometimes from all the heat. Start by tapping all four sides of the seat followed by tapping on the valve stem with the valve in place on the seat. Then try to insert a thin blade between the valve seat and the casting and try opening it around the perimeter. I would try removing the studs first. Try PB blaster and soaking for a couple days first. Cole

Hmm, Cole gets the prize.
I had a couple of beers and went back to it with more courage, and more oxy acetylene. It had indeed welded itself to the crappy studs. Tried to remove the studs first. You can guess the next bit. I should have tried the tapping the valve stem as Cole suggested, but finally prized it off the now broken ends of the studs. Cole is right again - there is no gasket under the seat - my memory must be slipping, along with other bits. 4 new studs drilled, tapped and in place now. Time for more beer to relieve the stress. Using the valve to force the seat off might have helped- but it would have been hard on the valve - these suckers were well stuck on.. The seat is very slightly warped now, so the next job is to get it back to square and lap it in. After the beer. I guess another approach for the future next time someone has this issue, would be to consider cutting the studs off flush to the valve seat, and drilling the bulk of the stud out til only a thin wall remained - which might be enough to detach the seat with a bit of a tap from the valve end. Think I would go that way next time instead of the path I followed. Thanks Alan
