Help on MSD upgrade check lists
 

I got a dead Permatune and replacing with MSD 6-AL2 programmable on 1989 930. The following is some of questions. Would you help me to get answer?

1. MSD to battery connection: Is it really necessary to connect MSD directly to battery? It is a reasonable long wire I have to use from back to front of car.

2. Green and Violet line: where should I connect these line?

3. Tach adapter: Do I need it for 1989 930? If I do, which one should I buy?

4. I am trying to use Bosch Racing W4CS Spark Plug with 0.04 gap. Is it OK or do you have a better suggestion?

Some questions and answers I got from Steve Weiner at Rennsport.

I used a tach adapter, but some guys have not used it. I'd try it without one first.

1- The large red wire goes to the battery or Positive lug on the starter solenoid.
2- The large black wire goes to ground.
3- The small orange wire goes to the Positive side of the coil.
4- The small black wire goes to the Negative side of the coil.
5- The small red wire goes to switched Pos.
5- The white wire is used to trigger a MSD shift light.
6- The violet wire? To the shield
7- The green wire? To the center conductor

Since the Turbo uses a magnetic pick up type distributor, my question is which wire does the MSD violet wire connect to and which wire does the MSD green wire connect to coming out of the distributor? Or does it even matter which one I connect to?

ANSWER: You are right in that the violet & green wires conduct the trigger voltage to the MSD. This is phase sensitive and must be connected correctly otherwise the car will not start or run poorly. Connect the green wire to the center conductor and violet wire to the shield.

I didn't want to cut any of my harness up, so I unplugged the wiring harness off the CD and connected my wires there (the ones from the distributor).

NOTES: In addition, to make the tach work correctly, the tach adapter is used and:
1- The red wire is to switched Pos.
2- The black wire is to ground.
3- The white wire goes to the tach output on the MSD unit itself.
4- The violet wire is run to the tach input (the purple and black wire by the CD unit).

I didn't need the tach adapter for my '87. Otherwise, the install is pretty straightforward as the Rocket Man has described.

Clarification
 

If my 930 uses magnetic pickup, should I see electrical harness from the distributor. However, my distributor does not have any electrical harness except for spark plug & ignition coil connector. Am I understand incorrectly?

By the way, would you add more explanations about "to the shield" and "to the center conductor"? I am not sure where or which area. Thanks.

Recommend 8910 Tach Adapter, for MSD...

Did an MSD 6A Re-install on 89 911SE in 09 and it worked out great using the 8910. Owner previously had his MSD 6A installed and after 30 days, car was missing and stalling and finally had to have it removed after being flatbedded. It may work fine but, not worth the risk turbo or NA.
Just did my 944S Club Sport with no hiccups 2 mos ago. Flawless....:)

Look at the back of the dizzy. You'll see a green wire coming out of it. That wire is a coaxial cable, like a tv cable sort of, with an inner and out conductor. If you follow it, it will go to the existing CDI box, where it splits in the plastic connector. You can either install male connectors and plug them in the connector as I did above, or cut the green wire and splice it in.
