Going Green? Adding Modular Catalytic Converters to the exhaust lineup.
Been working on this off and on for some time. The goal is to add a catalytic converter that plugs into my modular exhaust systems, replacing the muffler body. Same deal as always, you get any tailpipe configuration desired.
The obstacles: performance and sound. I used the largest 50 state legal OBD II catalytic converter I could find that was approved for the 930 (obviously visual is a problem). The intent is to plug this in place of the muffler body when needed OR to run it all of the time if you so choose. Butt dyno tells me we lost a little bit of power, nothing huge but you can tell. Sound quality is not too bad, very similar sound level as the Hooligan muffler. Tone is "fuzzy" due to the honeycomb. You could only run this all of the time if you like an aggressive note. This is a prototype and I am wide open to suggestions and ideas. Options are always a good thing and we 930 folks don't have any when it comes to a performance catalytic converter system. Don't know if our host is interested in something like this but it will be offered to Pelican when testing is complete. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298252413.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298252481.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1298252572.jpg |
What about the heat? I know cats come with an integrated heat shield (as seen), but is it enough? 930's are already very hot under there..
Looks great for those looking to go this route. |
My systems are designed to stand off of the engine by 1" which helps considerably with heat. Once we decide on which cat to use I'll run the system for a while and see how it performs. The valance is fiberglass so that really tells the tale with heat.

Hi Rarly
Its a bit off track, but I just wondered when I saw that Exhaust setup: If you made a venturi in the 180 degree bend of the exhaust. wouldn't you be able to draw in air from the RH side tail pipe hence lowering emissions readings on the left side (for inspection purposes). Just a thought. |
Tricky fellow you are! May have to look into that as I don't know how they measure dual out systems.

And our test centers are owned and operated by the State. There's no nudge or wink to get marginal cars to pass. (You guys in CA think you got strict emissions testing? Hah!) |
Looks great Brian, thank you for continually developing new products and options for the 930 community.
 |
Well I don't know how much call there is for something like this but the option needs to exist. Once we settle on which CAT to use I'll probably make a plug-in that replaces the aging OEM cat converter using the stock twin tip muffler. The ID on the OEM system is tiny compared to my stuff so it should help power.
Yeh Chris I suspect that dual systems are tested in both pipes instead of a mathmatical fudge factor added in using the numbers from 1/2 the system. You can't assume that both sides have the same flow. |
