intercooler install

Hey guys, I need a few opinions. I am in the process of installing a Garretson/Andial longneck intercooler. Everything fits well, but need a few opinions/info on what to do with the decel valve. If this is what its called. In question is the dish shaped vacuum pod which was connected to the recirc valve, and manifold. Seeing there is nowhere to install the plumbing lines on the new intercooler, Do I just vent the outlet to open air, or remove it completely and cap off the port from the manifold, and plug the smaller vacuum line? There is a tee where its joined to the manifold, So which lines would be the one to plug, which one to use as a vent? Also is the a need for it to be supported? Any pics would help. thanks Philip

I ditched mine and plugged the hole in the manifold. YMMV.

I am still using it but differently. Hooked up the larger hose to one end of split manifold pipe and have the smaller center hose breathing to atmosphere. As per this post.

Decel valve delete and idle

After doing a search I am planning on teeing off the hose that goes to the BOV on a long neck intercooler to the decel valve and venting it to the atmosphere. This is a good thread on it.

need a option for decel valve after BOV install.

decel valve

I am going to try running without the decel valve. I have a 965 BOV. If I find it to noisy (crackle) I may try reinstall the decel valve and tee it into the 1" line which runs from I/C to BOV. Boy this gets confusing, seems there is different terminology for the same parts. Or maybe i'm just fcked up. Philip

Andial (Garretson) Longneck Intercooler

Instructions I wrote up when we used to sell these:

1) To auxiliary air regulator (idle air bypass valve)
2) To vacuum limiter on driver’s side of engine, under the intercooler – connect to the hose from the vacuum limiter that was connected to the old intermediate bypass valve (offset port on vacuum limiter)
3) For VDO dashboard boost gauge sending unit (large red rubber covered sensor)
4) For overboost fuel cut-off switch
5) To wastegate’s lower control port
6) “T” pop-off valve’s vacuum line into vacuum hose running from throttle body to
vacuum limiter
- Replace intercooler’s rubber mounts as necessary (#930.113.430.00)
- Replace throttle body O-ring as necessary (#999.70.477.40)

(a) and (b) are self explanatory.

Chris, thats the I/C that I have, mine is in black matt finish. The difference is at point B, there is no connection for blow off valve, and no #2 connection. This leaves me a couple of connections short, likewise scratching my head. Thanks for the input, I post a pic of mine soon. Philip

Thanks for that info TurboKraft.

My Kokeln does not have that extra opening for the vacum limiter/decel valve so I plan on using the same outlet that works the pop off valve. Plus I will be sharing the same vacum line for those two items. No good?

Extra question, do you keep the center port on the vacum limiter/decel valve still connected to the intake manifold or do you vent it to atmosphere?

Thanks

Kokeln believed in eliminating the vacuum limiter (deceleration valve).
We are of a mixed view on this. We've had some cars run better with it, others drive nicer with it disabled.
I don't see a problem sharing the one port for both functions, unless it's a fairly well developed engine and you need a lot of flow for the diverter (aka pop off, blow off) valve.

One side is connected to the intake manifold, the other to the back of the intercooler -- an air source that is filtered and metered.

Add the ports to your intercooler as needed, very easy to do.

Thanks so much for posting this Chris. We picked up a used, modified Kokeln with several of the original bungs welded shut, so this schematic will prove to be very helpful. Thank you again!
