What happened to your fan, it went from polished to dull? Always like shiny stuff in the engine bay! Looks good!

The fan I polished by hand on the car then after I used cleaner on the engine it went back to that dull look. Should I have it polished or powdercoated red??????

Personally I would go for polish, & yours being older than an 86' shouldn't it have an aluminum fan & shroud? So the aluminum would hold the polish unlike magnesium.

Looks good. I'd go with a polished fan.

I polished my fan on a buffing wheel for hours. Looked good for awhile, but time took it's toll. Polished/silver powdercoat next time!

It looks good, but the fan being Mg will always go back to dull. Just polish it once in a while.

When you finally convince yourself that powdercoating is the only real option for keeping the fan looking good, make sure the guy doing the work tapes off the flat tips of the fan. Or else the tolerance build up between the tip of the fan blade and the housing will cause the fan to scratch and rub your new, pretty surface. And yes, they make a color of powdercoat that pretty much matches the look of polished magnesium.

I had my fan and housing powder coated, fan done in silver, and the housing done in a dull dark grey to resemble bare magnesium. best look i ever did. the bright color fans and housings don't age well IMO

My fan came off pretty easy. I just removed the nut and wiggled the fan until the it pulled off. Others have had to use/make pullers etc to get theirs off.

The shroud is harder but not too bad. You need to remove the shroud clamp, coil, a few bolts on the cowling behind the fan. I then pull it out so I can get to the wires behind the alternator. Once those are removed I can pull the shroud out.

Mine is at the powdercoaters right now.

Thanks forwheeler post some pic`s when your done. I was quoted $300 to remove and reinstall the shroud and the fan, and another $200 to powdercoat them both. This might be the way to go.

Thats sounds spendy to me but then again I live in Idaho.
I am getting my fan, shroud and the 4 valve covers coated for $75. It would be cheaper but I asked for 2 colors and extra masking work. I removed the parts myself.

Here is a pic of the parts after I received them from the powdercoaters. I was surprised at the amount of cleaning I needed to do to remove the blasting media from the uncoated side of the parts. I think they coated over some of the media on the fan shroud also but I didn't notice it until I got home.

Looks good in the pic. can you have them do it over?I just found a local guy that has an extra fan and shroud that he will give me to get done and will swap them out when I get them to him. No down time but the 3 hr`s it will take to remove and reinstall....I`ll post pic`s here after I`m done....

Mine is magnesium - and I sanded it from 220 grit all the way to 1000 wet. Used a magnesium polishing compound and the sheen real even - then had it powder coated clear. Looks like polished aluminum

I probably could have asked them to do it over but it was on the inside of the shroud behind the fan so it was not a big deal. Besides I just wanted the car back together.
