Curious, would you for your 930?

Would you give up your 930 for this?

There are faster cars than a 930, there are better handling cars than a 930, but there are damn few cars that feel as visceral and connected to the driver as a 930.

I mean really, how many cars out there talk to you and say.....Ok boy, do you know what your doing? Cause if your just winging it, I'm going to spank you.....

Funny, before I purchased my 930 I was looking at a few different cars and the E30 M3 was on my list. They were cheaper than the 911 Carreras I was looking at, but usually were quite a bit rattier. In the end, I found a 930 for not much more than what upper end 911s were asking. While the original E30 was historically interesting as a homologation special (like the first wave of 930s, actually), and this particular E30 M3 has had considerable work done to it, I have absolutely no regrets in picking a 930.

This is meant as a provocative question to flesh out the strong points of the 930 v. the E30 my fist new car happened to be an E30 M3, while I would not give my car up for any E30, this particular one is dead sexy. The 930 is alas, my car to the end.

I had an E30 M3 and traded it to a friend for his E34 M5. The M3 was severely lacking in torque, but fun to drive. However, I sold the M5 when I got my 85 RoW Carrera cab and haven't looked back. The Carrera gives a much better road feel and is way more rewarding to drive than the M3. I have a chance to buy my M3 back with a fresh 2.5 in it and I'm still thinking about it.

I picked sides a long time ago. BMWs do nothing for me personally, but most Porsches continue to intrigue me.

Linc-

Of course that's not a serious question - that's like comparing apples and cumquots.

The ideal answer, would be... both! 8-)

I see where the Q is coming from tho as I remember you being a Bimwad... you had some *ubergnarly* ///M6 back in your Long Island daze I recall 8-).

Fear not, I'm one too - 4yrs / 50k on my e28 ///M5 heh heh.

I used to want an e30 ///M3, closest I got was its fender rubbin paint tradin underappreciated and much lesser known across-town cousin - my 190E 2.3-16 (fantastic car, better than the ///M3 in some regards, worse in many others).

^THAT ONE^ is astounding. Best build I've seen prolly. Varrrry niiiiice. Shoot, think of what $30beans buys you today!? Geee, a new Camry - or - ^this^?

Agreed w/ Bryan about the torque issue - but this motor swap's solved that. Love the plaid cloth gut, and he LM's look tremendous on there.

Despite this - they're a bit too boy-racer for me nowadaze. Tho they certainly are going up in value lately, esp as most are pretty clapped out by now.

But as Mark eloquently noted, the 930 experience is like no other. The yardstick by which visceral and unforgiving and involving are measured, a gleaming point in history never to be repeated or replicated. Sure there are better cars, more capable. But none so rewarding... to those who are game. Not everyone is.

And Noah mentions the homologation significance - very true, and very cool. Funny how we all tend to gravitate toward the same types of heaps (I note you have an E55 now Bryan - cool!)

But an e30 and a 930 share only that in conversation otherwise - '30' in the nomenclature 8-).

Thanks for posting the link - I enjoyed the read / pics.

Looking forward to your results @ TurboKraft - you're giddy w/ anticipation, this I know! Kudos my friend, hope yer schwell!

To me a 930 is like a woman.... It has curves. It is tempermental, it sometimes likes to be driven hard, other times, it likes to be caressed. It takes all my money.... and leaves me obsessed for more. Its as beautiful clean and shiny, as it is dirty. It is who I am.... it completes me.

Although that BMW is one very fine example, I could still not fathom the idea of getting rid of it for that. The BMW just doesnt do it for me... it doesn't have the curves, the attitude, the style......

You won't be happy.. trust me!

Nice car.. very neat mod having the S38 motor stuffed in there. Still not so sure how quick it would be. Nice engine, very torquey.. builds speed relatively fast.. but nothing like a Turbo, and especially nothing like your Turbo.

When I first looked at the car I said oh no! Thought it was typical E30 M3 w/S14 Motor.. I never liked the way they vibrated, needed intake gaskets, or the way you had to run them up on the cams to get them to go.

I also used to get a kick outta smacking that M3 ass with my 73 911S w/2.7 at the time. Used to run some BMW club driver schools with that car and man those guys used to hate to wave me by! On the street, just flash the lights and let'em know daddys' coming by... that is if I allowed them to get in front.

Anyway, it looks like a very nicely done car, they can be fun to drive especially with that S38 engine in the bay. I would definitely love to add it to the garage, but it could never replace the 930.

I like that E30 M3. Not sure if the engine swap would devalue that car.

As for 930 vs E30...no way I would give up my 930.

I owned an E30 M3 for a little more than a year between 930s (1999). Powerwise it was neck in neck with a friends healthy 911sc on the track, not even close to a 930. About 205 HP and 23.35 ft lbs of torque!
