do I need grease under rack boot?

Hi all
I am replacing a torn steering rack boot. Do I need to reaply some sort of grease?
Thanks

No grease needed.... boots are meant to keep the piston clean and dry only, to protect the surface and the seal from damage.

in my opinion yes there should be some grease smeared on the rack ends under the boots to keep them from rusting.

being bare unplated steel they will slowly rust if left dry under the accordian rubber boots and the grease will definately not hurt anything.. but surface rust on the ends of the rack sliding in and out of the grease seals on each end of the housing as you turn the wheels and eventually mixing with the internal grease as you drive sure will.
