BAE Rev 3...it's not a BAE anymore

Well, after 2-1/2 years in the garage, I finally got the damn thing started today. The only BAE things left on the car are the rubberized bonnets, and some of the intake piping.

Countless mods in these past 2-1/2 years. The car started right up. 17 PSI on the WUR. I plugged the WUR in after about 5 minutes of run time, and control pressure went to 35 PSI, and the AFR gauge said 15+, so it was a bit lean. It has been filled with regular non-synthetic 5W-20 to run it in. Tomorrow I'll dump the oil and filter, put in the same oil to break in the rings a bit.

Bad news: Leak at the oil line for the turbo feed, where the oil pressure switch is, so I have a lot of stuff to get out of the way to plug it, and reroute the line. Drain is not as good as I would like, so I may have to fabricate Catch Can Rev 2.0, and put a check valve at the 4th oil cooler...doesn't everyone have four oil coolers?

Sounds good, however. It is now 3.0 SC, B-W T04B turbo, Flowmaster series 44 muffler, SC CIS with BL WUR, RPM Solenoid Switch. MSD 6AL with an MSD Boost Timing Master and a J&S Safeguard unit (not yet mounted, but the sensors are). JE custom 8.5:1 turbo special pistons and rings, final CR at 8.38:1. It will run at 5.8 PSI boost from a Tial 38 wastegate. OBX headers (I got them cheap, and figured I'd try em). Rest same as it was...ARP rod bolts, new oil pump, 993 Dilivar studs, DC-15 cams. We will see when I get it running AND driving.

Patrick, you've got some unusual combinations of stuff on there. 2.5 years of anticipation, I bet you can hardly wait to put it in gear and hit the road. I bet she really kicks ass!

It kicked a$$ before with the old BAE turbo setup til I blew it up.
So, today, I pulled some stuff out of the way..AN-3 oil fitting was loose, which explains the oil pouring out over the gearbox. That was the best case scenario (my own stupidity).

The old setup was putting out around 260+ RWHP. This setup should be over 300, I would imagine. SC's are fun with a lot of power.

771 moved under its own power, out of the garage, and took a quick trip around the block. I needed it's space in the garage to troubleshoot the 968 anyway. Maybe this week we can work on making some boost.

She's a sleeper...just waiting to blow someone away. Keep focused, get her up and running where you want her.

Mark, thanks!
The guys at the track with the late models ask me "how are you keeping up with me in THAT?"

Took the tub for a ride this evening. It sounds like a lawn mower. Ride wasn't long enough to get the oil warmed up, but I did get into 4th gear. I was going up the hill slowly near my house when I felt the boost come on at around 2500 RPM. I got on the flatland and it does make boost, but the recirc opens at about 2-3 PSI pounds, so the wastegate never opens...it is set at 5.8 PSI. It idles high, and I have to play with the WUR to get the cold and warm pressures dialed in. I think it has a vacuum leak somewhere. It was lugging at idle in gear. The fuel head is an old late model SC head I rebuilt, and tends to run a bit lean. I have an IA modded head, but that tended to run rich, and I haven't re-installed it since Stephen recalibrated it.

The tub has a few little issues, but it didn't blow up. It did get a little kick in it even at 2 PSI boost. I forgot what the rear engine was like. It is certainly not the 968 or the 986, which I have become adjusted to.

The tub is more sorted now. I had no power to the WUR, so as soon as the car warmed up a little, it ran like crap. Got 12V power to the WUR, reset the warm control pressure to 3 bar, and took it for a spin.

The improvement in power and response is noticeable, even though I barely got the car warmed up. I got it making full (5.8PSI) boost, the water injection injected, and the boost pressure controller kicked in. It screamed through third gear. The B-W turbo is a big difference over the old Rajay.
