Looking for a 930
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking to get back in the saddle of a 930. I had one a number of years ago and really miss it. I have checked many of the "usual" (ebay, autotrader, Rennlist, etc.) places that they pop up, but I thought this forum might provide some leads on some that I haven't come across, or find an owner contemplating sale, but hasn't gone to market yet. The ideal candidate would be 86-89 (Other years are OK, but I'm a little leary of grey market cars) excellent condition, all records, original, unmolested, etc. I'm not looking for a 10K mile garage queen with some insane price tag... Mid-mileage cars that have been well care for, well documented, etc. would be great. Any leads would be greatly appreciated! I can be reached at Larry@ChaletNursery.com Thanks! Did the turbo get the modified tranny in the normal Carrera series in 87 1/2 and beyond?
That might be a real bonus if you drive the car alot. Wish I had that in LA traffic.

Grey Market Cars
At this point, there really is no reason to fear grey market cars. Most have been in the country for many years and are fully titled and legal. I have owned two 930s both of which were grey market cars. One was 1985 and the other was 1988. I never had even one issue with inspections or emmissions or ownership documentation. (just thought this might be useful).

+1 on grey market cars. A great way to lose those ugly, ill-proportioned bumper butts and gain HP into the bargain, especially if you live in a state where inspections aren't required.

haha
As I was reading the original post and before I scrolled down I was composing a reply in my mind. Then I read utahRuf;s reply and it was almost exactly word for word what I was going to say about greys. I have maintained for a long time that should be no difference in prices. The persistence of that stereotype bugs me. Every part is available. Is a customs man or EPA going to show up at your door and say 20 to 30 year old car is here illegally and has to be sent back to the fatherland? Hell there are 959's etc here legally that nobody cares about. Is Hagardy not going to insure it because it is grey market? What is the big deal? Excelence continues to show a substantial deduction for grey market and I don't get it Jeb 79 930 EURO |

I think it depends on what was done to it. Some were really hacked to pass the safety requirements and also were strangled with aftermarket emissions stuff that caused premature engine failure. Others were brought in and this stuff was removed right away. Still others were bootleged into some states where nothing was changed from euro speck. Now those are just fine. Also back in the day, Porsche dealerships were forbodden to service the grey market ones and went to great lengths to discourage any authorized involvement including the resale of the ZZZ cars. Do not know if they are still as concerned.

What I think: Most of the grey market bashing out there, and there isn't much of it anymore, is simply a way for sellers of non grey market cars to attempt to create an advantage; i.e., suggesting that their Porsche North America cars are somehow superior because they came in through the PCNA dealer network. In reality, grey market 930s are the same cars minus all the smog crap that robbed the US market cars of 40HP. Plain old bull doody.
The wonderful thing about the free market system is that eventually consumers sort this kind of nonsense out and act accordingly. |

euro
Allot of owners try to replicate the the features of the euro's. Who wouldn't want standard features like lsd, h4's, lower ride height, more hp, different gearing ect. ect. I myself have one of each, and enjoy both. no regrets. Philip

Euro turbo could be ordered pretty bare of some options that were standard on the US cars. However many US cars had limited slip and Sport seats. The main difference was timing 26 us vs 29 euro BTDC. Check the cam part#s and the exhaust headers otherwise they were very similar. As mentioned before some Grey market cars were butchered when new to pass EPA & DOT which gave all 930 cars a bad rap with the motors giving out early especially if driven with lots of wot due to crappy emission parts that were added to pass EPA. By now most of these conversions parts have been removed or motors rebuilt so almost a moot point however some caution should be taken to verify the history.

How soon do you want to buy? I have a Euro 930S I am finishing some things up on. Bought it because it had a good drivetrain and was a factory slant. Would like to finish and enjoy it a week or two before putting it up for sale. Buying a bigger house. Probably get rid of the 928 as well.
