my "new" 930
My “new” 930.
I have been a member of this forum since 2005. I started reading this forum when I decided to “restore” my 930. I bought this car in ‘79 with a little over 20,000 miles on it. After I put over 300,000 more miles on it I decided it needed a little overhaul. It still had the original paint and the paint was worn down to the primer in some areas. ![]() ![]() It has been my daily driver for most of this time. I have not owned another Porsche and I know this one in and out but not much about other models. This forum has some very knowledgeable people contributing to it and I think it is a very valuable resource for people like me even though we do not have very much to contribute. With the daily grind I go sometimes months without signing on. I started dismantling the car in 2007. I boxed and labeled everything and took copious amounts of pictures. Last year my computer crashed and I lost all of the pictures. That is what makes this forum so great. I can search and find most of what I forgot when I took it apart, but not all. I would work on it in my spare time until I got disenchanted with the project. Then I would push it in the corner and not look at it for a couple of months (until I would miss driving it) then I would read this forum and get motivated to work on it some more. ![]() It spent one year at one body shop doing some body correction work that needed to be done. I then spent the next year slowly removing the undercoating. It spent the last year at the second body shop. This is what appeared back at my garage last month. ![]() Now the fun work starts, putting it back together. This is the problem. Without the pictures I took my memory is not always there. I am now putting the wiring harness back in the car. I am not sure where the part of the harness that goes through the tunnel goes from the front trunk to the passenger compartment. I have taken pictures of other coups but they do not have the same wiring as my car. Oh, by the way, in case you have not gathered it by my user name the car is a 76 930 #272. Does anyone have pictures of the front trunk area rear of the fuse panel that shows the wiring harness? I am looking for where the wiring loom that goes to the rear goes from the front trunk area by the fuse box through to the passenger area and then into the tunnel. I also need to know how the battery/starter cable is routed through the car. Also, pictures of the area behind the pedals in the passenger cabin where the wiring harness comes through the firewall would be helpful? I want to make sure I do it right before I put harness through the tube in the tunnel. Hopefully some one will have pictures available. Thanks in advance. Bill |

Welcome back, that new paint looks good, mine is in some need of that. I've got number 311, so not far off from yours, funny thing is that I picked it up from the bay area and brought down south, too bad you're not closer, there are acouple of 76's on the board down here.
Regardless, I just went out to see if I could snap some quick pics for you, but it's going to have to wait, I've got to take some stuff off to see what you are asking for. I'm going out of town for a bit, but when I get back I'll try to help as much as I can.

Bill (zacks76930),
Nice work you're doing. About the computer crashed have you considered having it "recovered" by a computer shop?

Wow Bill - what a great story! I really enjoyed the read!!!
I'm astounded @ your ownership - good for you! Really gives hope for the long term prospects for these. Must have been a glorious time for you. Good luck on your project, I'm looking forward to following along in the resurrection. One nit... as much as I like Cup wheels I've always thought they look somewhat out of sort (era) for a 930... and yours being a '76 (which I really consider extra special cars), it's even more of a disservice. IM*H*O, butofcourse 8-). Maybe consider some proper wheels on there? Opinions being like arseholes, that is... we all got 'em! Still cannot get over how much use you've gotten out of that! KUDOS SIR! |

If the hard drive still spins you can get the pictures your self. You can get adapters like 911SC mentioned here as well, there are a number of choices. I personally have the Rosewill one, it works fine for me. If you live in the south bay I would be willing to try it for you but cannot promise anything.
Newegg.com - usb to ide/sata adapter If the hard drive doesn't spin there are still places that can recover the data but they can be a bit pricey. I have a 77 I bought a year ago that has been down since purchase. I am way jealous of you putting 300,000 miles on a turbo.

Thanks for all the advice on the disk recovery. What happened is that my HP using windows xp did an automatic download of service pack 3 and it crashed the computer. When I tried to have a "technician" help from HP they cause a full wipeout of the disk drive and reset the computer back to it original state. I had someone look at it and he said that it would cost alot and could not guarantee anything. The really only thing I had on that computer was the pictures of the tear down so I figured I could take pictures of other cars as a resource.
krasuskyp; I agree about the cup wheels. I had gold centered BBS racing wheels until ten years ago. When I couldn't find good 15 inch tires I got these with tires at a very good price (free) from a friend. It allowed me to do the upgrade to the brakes per Bill V. Once I am done with putting the car back together I will look into getting something similar to what I had. |

From the looks of that first picture, you really "polished the paint off of it..." Looks like [with the new paint] you won't have to do too much polishing
