99' 996 Tip turbo upgrade - no response in 996 forum
 

Like the title says, I am looking into upgrading my 996 to a turbo, I posted in the 996 forum and did not get any responses. Any input will be appreciated.

Rennlist has a lot more traffic for the later water cooled cars.

With that said, the best way to upgrade from a NA 996 to a turbo is to sell your NA car and buy a turbo car. If you choose to turbo your existing car don't say I didn't warn you.

Fabspeed!!! My friend Will did his 997, exhaust, intercoolers, and computer flash there. Great guys and worth every penny.

You know the 996 NA short block is not the same as the 996 turbo short block, don't you? Completely different cases, lubrication (wet sump vs. dry sump).

Maybe supercharging would be a more cost effective (if there is such thing on a Porsche) solution.

I guess this post ended rather quickly, looks like I will be in the market for a TT. Thanks guys...

Been down this path with a 2000 Tip.

Here's the problems:

1. 996's have 11.3:1 compression as I am sure you are aware. You will not be able to run high boost to really make that thing make serious power. I am sure you could hit maybe 8-10psi but after that, no telling what will happen with the problems due to the fit between the sleeves and block. Slipped sleeves happen occasionally leading to total engine loss.

2. GIAC, the company who makes the computer chips and injector kits for the supercharged kits will not work with you unless you are vendor.

If you can overcome these, you will be good to go as everything else if pretty straightforward from a fab standpoint.

Oh. I mis read the question. I thought you wanted to upgrade a 996 turbo. Sorry.

Oftentimes installing two head gaskets on each side will lower the base/native compression enough that a decent level of INTERCOOLED boost could be made use of.

Has no one experimented with a LOX tank/supply For BOOSTING factory engines...?
