I will tell you this.... ALL of the red tops that I have owned were JUNK. In both of the cars that I had the red tops in, I had to replace both of them twice. And one of the cars had a battery cut off switch in it. There was no partasitic drain on either battery.
I will also tell you this. I had built a huge rock crawler Jeep with a Lt-1 vette engine in it. I had two yellow top Optima batteries in it. They were wired in parallel, and I had the ability to cut one of them off to use for the winch if I needed to. Both were hooked up to a battry cut off switch, and I had the batteries for almost 4 years. ZERO problems out of either battery. The blue tops are a deep cycle marine style battery. I would stay away from those. Just a little info... hope this helps!

Unless you drive the car daily I wouldn't buy an Optima. Something changed with them about 5-6 years ago and they became very needy. If you don't charge them regularly they lose voltage and won't start the car.
I have an Optima Yellow Top in my Bronco that has been replaced once despite only being used to test wiring during a restoration and it was charged up after each use. The new one is ten months old and will not start the truck if it sits for more than 5 days at a time. The wiring and charging system is new and there is no drain on the battery when the ignition is off. The battery just sucks unless you use it all the time. Look into an Odyssey or a Deka. |

Thanks for the help my battery guy was also steering me towards an Odyssey but they are a little more money but if the optima's have problems than the Odyssey may be the way to go

I was just going to suggest looking at the Odyssey. I have heard good things. Albeit, it requires a different charger to charge it versus a trickle is my understanding. A friend has one in his 912 with zero problems. The feature I like about it are the size, weight, and shelf life. It will be the next racing battery for me. They are a little pricey though, but so is about everything else for these cars.

I had a red top. It was 12 years old, I changed it to a yellow top, simply because it was 12 years old. The red top is still good, and charged. I use it for 12V DC experiments. It is now 15 years old.
