Driving impressions Porsche 930 and Ferrari F355

I recently drove a F355 through a mountain canyon and today took my '85 Porsche 3.6 Turbo on the exact same drive. The Porsche makes 450hp, has 245 and 315 tires, coil over suspension, front and rear sway bars and a G50 5spd. It's a beast. Compared to the F355 the Porsche has much more explosive power once on boost. The Porsche has much stronger brakes. I am an experienced track driver in my Porsche.

The F355 is an amazing, balanced machine. I felt comfortable in the F355 very quickly. The F355 turns in so fast its mind boggling. Although the power isn't as explosive, it comes on very predictably and is certainly enough to be entertaining. Giving the balance of the mid engine design I could drive the car at a fast pace very confidently. I felt like the F355 was taunting me to go faster and faster. Just awesome.

The Porsche on the other hand is thrilling because, it feels like its trying to kill you. I drive this car all the time yet I was more confident in the F355 on my first day with it. With the Porsche you have to use those big brakes to slow way down to enter a turn, then feed in the power and explode out of the turn. With the F355 you can just carry your speed into the turn.

The F355 I felt was easier to drive fast.

The bottom line is that I believe if driven properly by an expert the Porsche is the faster car, however for an average driver the F355 would be faster.

Both cars are magical and offer tremendous bang for the buck. Both make incredible sounds.

The 355 is on my short list for sure. I am fortunate to own and tune a 64 356sc coupe never rusted mostly original, a 75 911s coupe also never rusted and mostly original and a 87 930 cab from Fla and in great shape. In my travels I happened on the 355 Ferrari and they rock. For sure it is a very different feel, ride and ......
But nobody can argue the fact of it's status in the high performance world. The model has it's share of issues, but my advice is pull the trigger.

I am most likely purchasing the car. It has already had the valve guides replaced, the headers replaced, test pipes installed and the top mechanism had work to make it perfect. I had a compression test done and it did great, now if I can get good leakdown numbers then it will be a done deal. The car had its engine out major service last summer. From what I understand once these cars are sorted out they aren't that bad to own but if they are not sorted you can be in for $15K bill or even worse if cylinder damage has occurred from not sorting it out soon enough. This car is well loved, sorted out and recently serviced, should be as good a 355 as one could hope for. I'll post pics soon...

I'm glad you found a good one. F355 make a marvelous sound! I especially like the Capristo exhaust (level 2). I really wanted one and searched for some time. The ones I found had aged poorly. The other interesting point I found was they stopped production in 1999, but few cars( 1 with 55K) out there are over 30K miles. In asking about that point, a Ferrari mechanic said "30K miles is a life time for a 355". I finally nixed the whole search when looking at a yellow 1997 one. The car was to be in great shape with 17K miles. The salesman drove the car and had a huge cloud of blue smoke erupt from the back of the car. They have great potential, but I was scared off.

Thanks for sharing the comparison impressions Mr. Skier.

Wow - didn't realize from yer 1st post you were considering it for purchase... NOICE!!!

Wayway cool, IMO the 355's are the verylast of the analog Ferrari's - everything is so digital now.

I've some WOT time in my bud's silver/red/blacktop Spider, oh whattacar. And it's funny, he was all set to move 'up' to an F360 but was sorely disappointed compared to his F355S.

Sad but true.

Agreed w/ all the sentiments and points ^above^ but they really can be fantastic cars - and - IMO should be Spiders to be 'fully / properly' enjoyed.

Oh whatta SOUND!

Funny, this is the 2nd time in 2 daze F355's have come up in convo - PeteyWheat here called me just yest asking if I knew of any good ones as he knows someone looking - go figure.

Awesome man, good for you. Hope it all works out. PicspicsPICS!!! 8-)

Keep us posted! I'd add one to my 930 in a heartbeat...

Totally agree with you.

Driven both... two different machines... two different "tastes"... both great cars... BUT... "There is no substitute".

He will have plenty of time for engine pics...since it will be out of the car often! I hope your luck is better than most....there is a reason they are cheap.
