Choosing the correct MSD unit.

Hi fellow P owners.

I have decided to go MSD. I need some help choosing the right one.
It`s a 79 930 with k27 turbo and uprated headers etc. Streetcar.
Can someone point to wich unit i should go for and accessories for it. Blaster coil?

I tried searching but then i got even more undecided:( And i`m a total noob on this.

TIA

Greetings:

I have the MSD6AL-- A little time consuming-mounting-splicing-wires-etc...But well worth it.

If you have laptop/computer the MSD-6AL-2 Ignition Control is the way to go.

Someone on the board did it, and posted results! Great info.

Hm. I was hoping to avoid the laptop thingy but maby i`ll try it. What if i don`t want to go with a laptop?

What`s the partnumber that i need. I see some with 6420 amongst others..

I went with a 6AL-2 on the 930 this spring and had great results. I also put in a high-vibration Blaster coil and Magnecor wires. I'm very happy with it all.

Here's my thread discussing it: MSD Success

Ok i`ll go with that one i think. I`m worried about the distributor and the work on it. I just don`t understand ignition stuff. About retard and advance etc. Blows me away.

You want to be careful, go slow, and read up a bit more. Too much advance, especially on boost or with poor fuel, can cause damage to your engine.

I'm not familiar with the 79, and I assume yours is ROW. Can you post what your owner's manual states for timing specs? That's a good place to start.

If you don't want to mess with locking down your distributor and your stock mechanisms are working, then you can save a few bucks with the standard 6AL unit. Or go with the -2 and program your curves at 0, allowing the stock advance (and retard if you have it) to do it's job. That way if you decide to go the programmable route, you already have the unit installed.

At a minimum, you need to get a timing light and verify that your advance/retard mechanisms are working properly and your static timing is set to spec.

If the words advance, retard, ATDC, BTDC freak you out, then I would suggest staying away from the programmable 6AL2's and such if you don't plan on using all they're capable of. Rather, just go with the basic 6AL for a much improved ignition over stock.

Item number 6425 (replaces 6420). See this link: Digital 6AL Ignition Control - 6425

+1 on Mark's comments. I missed the post he quoted when I responded the first time. Keep it simple if you aren't ready to dig into timing tweaks.

I run a 6AL on my '87, so I guess the answer is yes.

Thanks. Just realized you had it listed as a mod on your sig.

I run a 6al on my 912 motor also with the magnacore wires. I need to get a better coil than the stock bosch blue coil as i have burned out two so far-

nothing like a solid hot spark!

JFairman 07-31-2011 07:00 AM

The tock 912 coil is black. The blue coil that was so popular in the early eightee's is ok with points and condensor but is the wrong impedance for MSD and it will cook the primary windings.

The MSD epoxy filled "high vibration" blaster coil is the best choice for your 912 with MSD CDI.
The MSD sticker that looks like it was designed by a power drunk teenager will peel off the coil and then it's just semi gloss black.
