Turbo Wars: Garrett GT3582R vs. BorgWarner S300SX 8375

G'day all, I'm looking at a couple of turbo options for my EFI build that could support 500hp. These two fine examples of turbos seem to be a decent fit. I plan to run a divided set of headers so a twinscroll turbo can be used for quicker response.

BW link: BorgWarner S300SX 8375 Turbo S360 - Full-Race.com

GT link: Garrett GT3582R Twin Scroll Turbo - Full-Race.com

Thanks in advance for your advise and help!

Nice huh - no more guessing and reading old and outdated charts! It even plots your specific engine air volume needs and scales the VE charts!

Yep, what gets me excited is the 487 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 rpm and only 15 psi of boost

There is still quite a bit of guess work as we don't know the VE of our engines. Certainly not achieving 100% much less 105%. I would think maybe 85%-90% tops at peak torque.

Squirrel Performance has a similar calculator but offers turbos from other manufacturers. It to relies on data you must "guesstimate".

Yes, I've read that before and it does give you a good baseline but still assumes VE. They quote 80% for a typical engine.

CRs

Ken, I'm no expert here but I think CRs always matter, but it's a moving target on a boosted motor cuz it goes up with boost. That's why the static CR on a 930 is so low at around 7:1, but once you add 15 psi of boost that number becomes more like 10:1.

You pros wanna splain this better for me?
Thanks

Yup....

After reading all this data and you are going with EFI. It looks like BW S300 8375 is the turbo I would go with. Value and performance on the graph speaks for itself. But once in the car/setup-cams--blah-blah it could be another story.

The-BorgWarner S200SX 7670 Turbo looks interesting smaller like a K27-Prouduces Recommended for use in quick spooling 380-480+ whp applications..I proabably with go with this if I had CIS-only.

I think you can't go wrong.

Thanks Walt, I'm gonna give the BW a try!

I ordered it with the newly introduced billet compressor wheel, so should perform better then expected

You can see how it performs for me hopefully in the near future here: The Beautiful Puzzle: 1987 3.3L 930 EFI Build
