Turbo "S"?

Any input about this car, other than the slant-nose conversion? It is said to have the Turbo S front bumper, and the Wikipedia article says the 325 HP performance option cars used a 4-pipe exhaust, but it is not badged as an "S",

Porsche 930 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Soooooo, is the exhaust factory, is the car an S, or was that designation not used then? Is there a serial number designation or external feature identifying it as being the 325 hp option? Comments? TIA

"S" was the designation for the slope nose back then. "SE" was the designation for the uprated motor. Quad exhaust, bigger intercooler, SC cams and better turbo.

The whole nomenclature thing is a bit misleading. These cars were never badged "S" in the US. In the UK the SE stood for Sport Equipment and included all the bits mentioned.

The car in the pictures definitely does not have a Turbo S front bumper. Bumpers for all cars were the same. I think valence is what they were trying to say but in the US the valence was the same as for any other turbo. ROW cars had front mounted oil coolers which drove the valence that was referred to. US cars were not allowed to have front mounter oil coolers so no different valence.

Also, while the car in the pictures does have a quad exhaust, it is not the factory exhaust associated with the higher performance motor. It's an adaptation of the standard exhaust in that the tailpipes are the same as the regular turbo version.

You can look at your intercooler as well to confirm that you have a regular 930.

As they say pics are worth a thousand words:

The factory valence:

The factory quad exhaust:

Thanks 'Turtle!

This car's slantnose is thought to be aftermarket, but I assume the SE option was available in the non-slant-nose?

Is there a way to tell externally if it has the SE option, this one now has a K-27 turbo,

I believe that the SE had the same intercooler as in the picture above. the k 27 turbo also had the last 4 numbers of 7006 in the number(but i'm no expert). as far as the slant conversion if it has the single motor in the middle that means it was most likely done correct, but I don't know how you would know if it was done by porsche or a shop over here in AMerica with Porsche parts? I know on my title it reads 930S

fyi...one way to tell the difference between a factory flatnose and aftermarket is the factory used a single motor to power the headlight lifts. You should see a single bar joining the lift mechanism. Aftermarket kits used 2 motors (typically RX-7) to lift the headlamps.

I want to provide an update on the valence topic. While I stand by my previous statements, in doing a little digging I did find a picture of what appears to be the valence design you have on your car. So I guess technically in some market through Porsche Exclusive you could procure one....I do not believe it was common and as such was also not universally associated with the "S"

This image comes from a period publication and the car in fact is a non-turbo Carrera with a series of Porsche Exclusive items.

the front valance in your picture does not match his. the spacing of the fog lights is different. but that being said who knows.

Some more details if they are helpful, car is an '85, according to owner car was purchased in Germany and slant nose conversion done there, SC cams and K-27 turbo added during motor rebuild 20K ago, supposedly makes more power that way?

And yes, it has the 2 headlight motors of an aftermarket conversion,

then its definitely not a special wishes car or porsche parts for the slant. obviously that just affects value and not performance. I just had my cams re profiled to SC so i am told that is a great cam for these engines. the higher HP engines are to have 930/66 designation and not the 930/68. this is a stamped on the passenger side rear of the engine below the fan shroud area. I am thinking it can be seen with the engine in. my car is at the shop or i would check for you. how much are they asking for the car?
