Strange Tachometer

My 85 Euro Turbo have a strange Tachometer. Most of the time is working. Sometimes it not working when the engine is at speed. The other day I realised when it not working is when it is at idle. I was sitting in traffic. The Tachometer was idling nicely at 900 rpm. Each time I touch the trottle to gas it a bit. The tachmeter went opposite and dropped down to Zero. When I didn't touch the trottle it bounce back to 900. Now I realised why some times it not reading when I am driving. With more speed the needle actually dropped to the bottom Any idea why??

Hey there,
Classic sign of an alternator that is faulty, or at least questionalble wiring connections to the alternator.
Others may chime in shortly, with other possibilities as well.

When I bought the car few years ago, it was the same except it dies on me each time the tachometer stopped working. It checked to a coil inside the Distributor which was changed out by a Porsche specialist. A few months later the Charge light came out on the Dash. The Alternator was serviced with new carbon brushes and regulator. After resembled the charged light still lite. Found out that the diao on the charge light was gone. Changed the diao and all was well. Tachometer never got fixed.

what is your electrical system voltage? measure at idle, and also at 3000 rpm.

Chris,

Saw the Video. About the same problem as what I have. Did you managed to fix it?
Did you change the reguator? was it located internal at the alternator?
