5 Speed Transmission

I'm thinking that I might want to drop a 5 speed trani into my 85. I'm enjoying the 4 speed but I think a 5 speed will give me better shift points especially 1sr, 2nd and 4rd. Any suggestions on a manufacturer/model and any problems that might crop up?

You can search G50 or 915 swap. The G50 is way more expensive then a 915 though, but handles more power. Thats all I know.

CMS Motorsports has G50s and 915s in a 5 speed configuration. I've just emailed and asked if the G50 can be installed in a 1985.

Converting to a G50 will require modification to the rear torsion bar tubes (and TB themselves) since the G50 is wider.

I think Patrick motorsports has a bolt in option, but it will cost about as much as an SC.

Additionally the G50 series of transmissions require a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder, which equats into a new pedal assembly + a new 5spd. shifter assembly too.....

your better off regearing the 4 speed. no converting to hydraulic clutch torsion bar tubes and shift linkage. plus the 4 speed box is indestructible.

Even that is not a simple "bolt in" process...

Regearing? interesting. What does this involved and what does it cost? What performance with this change?

You need to research this but changing 2nd 3rd and 4th gear sets should make a huge difference. I think rule of thumb is $600-700 per gear set not sure.
Your goal is to shorten up the spread of gears and start by selecting a more reasonable top speed in 4th and adjusting the remaining gears to even out the range. I suggest 165mph in 4th and go from there. Depends upon your personal goals with the car.

Food for thought. If you don't mind putting some time in, you can get a G50 fairly cheap. I bought an 87 Carerra at a salvage auction and had it shipped to NH, after selling off some parts and the engine I am into the project for $2300 and still have a bunch of parts left over. It helps to have the complete donor car for the G50 swap. I am going with a coil over set up, but if I didn't I'd have the parts to convert the torsion tubes. Just an option. I figure by the time I am done selling off all the good parts I will end up with the trans for free (excluding labor).

I'm going to give this 5speed some serious thought over the winter. I don't think re-grearing is what I'm looking for. I'll keep everyone posted.

I like having the fifth gear, I did a G50/50 conversion from Patrick Motorsport, not for the faint of heart. The project was very costly both from the parts and labor perspective, does it shift better? but to the tune of 18-19K maybe more, the trans from PMS including the Guard diff, pedal box, clutch, KEP flywheel, Motorsport clutch from Sachs etc. was roughly 14K plus about 5K in labor. The Ruf is the less expensive option and like the G50/50 there are only one or two that are for sale from year to year.

I have an SC-w/ 915-gear box w/3.3Trubo--with some goodies...I Rebuilt the gearbox-when I did a top end-rebuild...
You cant go to bonzo in 1st and 2nd gear...You will definitely break something real soon..
I normally shift from 1st--to 3rd--normally with no--stuttering or bogging..And 2nd to 4th..Save the gearbox--wear and tear...
3RD-Gear is the sweet spot in at 3200-3500--rpms.....60-130mph.. I luv top end.. A could care less of 0-60mph....
This past weekend with temps. high 60's and sunny..My 4th gear..felt like my 3rd gear..Just beautiful.....The only down fall/top end speed is only 140mph at 6000rpm/MSD6AL-limited pill.
If you look at the current 997gt3.2 RS gear ratios. It is very similar to the SC--but the gt3 revs to 8500rpm...
With a lightweight car-2600-2700pound car and 380-400whp.....You have a very nice sleeper car...
Two beamers who wanted play w/me this weekend side by side--1. late 90's 750il and newer 530i....reacted this way when I wanted no part of them on clear straightaway---

OH-INMOP-I would keep the 4speed and make it better. ..If you have the funds$$$--G50.

Walt
