OK. Brian idea is to have coil overs as anti squat device- good.

The combination used for the rear coilover set up is Bilstein Sport Rear
shocks with Rebal Racing 200# coil overs. ( No additional gusseting or
reinforcement of the rear shock towers is required)

Cole, if one were to add these to the rear, what would you compliment the front with, the sport insert?

Very productive day.
I drove the slant over to my friend's German auto restoration shop so we could really tear into it and see what we have. The only surprises were very pleasant ones:
> The hood latch did not work (wouldn't close) fixed that.
> Hood shocks shot, replaced.
> Squeaky wheels persist, found another broken e-brake spring, safety wired for now.
> Replaced badly cracked oil tank to engine cooler S hose.
> Changed some really nasty looking oil.
> Pulled the valve covers - no broken studs and valves in good adjustment! WoW!
> Checked plugs, they need to be replaced.
> Axle boot ripped, need to replace.
> Brake fluid nasty, need to replace.
> Found source of pretty bad oil leak, need to replace a hose.

Good day! I drove the car home with confidence as it really runs and drives well! I think if I can find one more good day over Christmas to work on 'er she'll be ready to start driving. I ordered tires for the big Fuchs so that will be nice. The cosmetics I can fix while driving/enjoying the car. This will make selling my beloved Red Rocket a little easier.
Here she is on the lift in good company!

Did you notice the RS clone in the back? That one has a fresh 3.2L to go with the light weight chassis.

Tt:

When I started the suspension refresh I called Clint at Rebel Racing. I told
Clint that I street drive the car and was interested in some helper coilovers
that would help eliminate the squat as well as making rear ride heigth easier
to adjust. Clint suggested a combination of 200# coilovers and Bilstein
Sport shocks in the rear and Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks up front and
increasing the front swaybar size to 22mm. That's the combination I'm
running.

Cole, what TB size are you having on the rear?

I have same setup with coilovers as helper spring on rear. 23/29 TB but way to understeer, so planning to go 22/31

I may jump in and beat Cole to the punch....I am running 22frt -31 rear, hollow t-bars on my 79 930 with no helper springs. Car weighs 3190 lbs with me in it. So its not a stripped out shell, and these t-bar sizes work out pretty nicely. I drive it 50% street and DE, and the ride is not overly stiff on the road. It squats very little under acceleration as far as I can tell. I need to have someone follow behind me on track to let meknow how bad it is though.
The car is fairly neutral, though it still understeers slightly when tracking it thru low speed turns on DE days. Nothing that cannot be modulated with a little throttle steering with good use of the gas pedal. You can also trim it with adjustable sway bars to dial it in.

mine is squatting pretty bad now also. Since i finally got the wur dialed in correctly with the higher displacement/ compression ratio and boost. when i nail from off the line to at least 3rd gear it feels like the front wheels arent on the ground.

So what's wrong with that? Less friction on the road surface to slow you down

I have the same problem- I think I need to stiff the rears and lower the front a bit... Looking to add coil overs if I can get a hold of Clint at rebel racing. Called and no answer, sent an email and nothing yet...

Word on light steering, one caveat, I was running stock boost with a stock build, but at wot the front felt like it was about to leave the ground. It was my alignment, had it looked at and adjusted, it solved the issue (didnt think to ask what they changed). I know you guys are running much more power, but something else to think about...

Brian, when are you going to change your sig line, you've got a big boy car now

Big boy car, he he. The gray car sits in the corner with her mouth shut next to the red rocket.

After the '78 sells I'll start enhancing the '85. She'll be the new test bed and will go through a quick evolution. I plan to start with a variety of turbos on the stock engine then go to my headers and repeat with larger turbos. I've got a prototype muffler in the works that needs more road time as well. We will test the limits of CIS on a stock engine with stock redline. I really want to see how far you can go with a bone stock engine with only bolt-on exhaust parts and modified CIS.

Brian, I am very much looking forward to all your testing.

As a break in the show can you tell a little about what turbos you'll be testing?

I should talk, theres always a certain amount of sentiment towards the current mistress, I feel guilty spending more time on the 930 while neglecting the 914 (how lame is that?).

Your grey car is a monster waiting to be unleashed! I look forward to the updates and testing as I'm on a similar path, but with the smaller 3.0....
