gusset clutch pedal
Well I brought my 930 about two weeks ago and have had a ball driving it over 2,000 miles in that time. The inevitable repair came up with my clutch pedal bending.
I searched the forums and found I am not alone and there was suggestions of weld gussets to reinforce the pedal but no examples. Before I start I am hoping for advice from someone who has "been there done that" Thanks in advance, Fritz ![]() |

If there is much interesting in buying a clutchpedal made from chromoly sheet, please express it on here, just finished rebuilding my pedal set, and its still out of the car, so I would consider measuring up the stock pedal/arm/ bushing and look at fabbing the new pedal arm/bushing and pedal face... the chromoly will not bend as the original steel does.. but this would not be a 20-50 dollar part....
Another thing to consider here is tension / load / and proper clutch adjustment / pressure plate force, if you have an aftermarket clutch with a much high pressure plate load, its exerting much more force on the pedal, also the picture here shows the reverse tension spring, it looks over tightend here, based on the amount of theads here shown on the adjuster. It pulls the arm the opposite direction of the pedal shaft, so if you have a super stiff pressure plate, with this spring over tighted at the pedal, its even more force exerted on this arm, which is going to help bend it... I welded a piece of 4130 1/8" thick to the left side of the clutch pedal. My car (3.6 in a 911) had a unnecessary super heavy sport pressure plate. The pedal bent to the floor on the drive home after buying the car! Upon inspection the previous owner had bent the pedal back up a number of times. I turfed the pressure plate for a stock unit.
The piece of metal contours the clutch pedal starting about a half an inch below the bottom bend and extends about a half inch above the top bend. The factory pedal arm is about 3/16" thick so the added 1/8" increased the thickness by 66%. I'm sure some mild steel would work fine for this. ![]() Did a bushing replacement while I was at it: ![]() ![]() |

WTF! I have owned many Porsches and if you are bending your pedal arm something is not right. Check your linkgage and cables everything shought move smooth.

First thanks for all the advice.
Some of the fun of owning old modified cars is the detective work we need to do. When I brought my car weeks ago it came with some spare parts, including two new clutch cables. I did not think it was to odd as I always carried a spare in my 911's but two? One had a date on it from 1998. Well I pulled the pedal assy, out and re bushed it, and straightened and welded gussets on the pedal arm and removed the clutch cable to put a new one in as a matter of course, and found out it does not fit! 930 cables do not work with Ruf 5-speed transmission equipped cars, I believe it had the original cable in it from 1984! The ends were OK but the shroud had a grove worn in it. That I believe is where the binding was caused. Search function on Pelican revealed another who already jumped these hoops and provided the Ruf part number #R30 423-401-01 I provided a picture of the gusset I did, over kill I know, but it failed on the strip in Vegas bumper to bumper traffic!!! ![]() Last edited by ficke; 01-31-2012 at 11:58 AM.. I know that beefing up the clutch pedal is fixing the symptom of a bigger problem but when that issue surfaced if the pedal was strong enough I could have made it back with out so much drama. Good luck all, fun cars!! |
