Would it be possible to twin-charge a 930?
After seeing this cool Lotus that runs both a turbo and supercharger I was wondering if something similar would be feasible on a 930.
<iframe width="853" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HmscSzFurwg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Here is a schematic of how Lancia did it on the Delta S4. http://antholonet.com/EngineersCars/DeltaS4/Airflow.jpg It seems like you could stuff a belt driven Vortech where the AC compressor is without too much trouble. I know the plumbing would get interesting and it would take cubic yards of money but it would be cool. Imagine having 6psi at idle! |
i would think a positive displacement blower would be better than a centrifigul as you want the instant response of the PDB and the top end power of the turbo. Certainly it would work... It is a combustion engine afterall

Interesting video. That thing's like driving a go-kart on steroids. 700+ hp out of a 1.8 liter engine. Thing must be built well to handle it. Looks to be a kick in the pants.
Do that to a 930 and you would have a new kind of beast. Be sure and post us when you've completed the project;) |
My old tuner was working with a shop several years back on the 2003-2004 cobras. They were keeping the stock roots type blower and adding a turbo so you had the down low response of the roots type with the top end of the turbo. The only draw back to this design is that the blower becomes a restriction. It did turn out to be a VERY good combo though:)

VW does it on one of their small 1.4 liter engines.

This application shows a blower by-pass. |
Can be done but the trouble of fabbing it all up plus the additional weight would be very counter productive I'd imagine.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1265715556.jpg I've since done more tuning and minor changes to get to an even 350 at the wheels. Adding a turbo would be a tuning....challenge...I suspect the extra plumbing and bits wouldnt be all that much more. Could you engineer it to use the same bypass valve?...intercooler has no changes, supercharger must already manage oil circulation so reuse that for the turbo. |
