Weird “click” noise…
 

I have a ’89 930 and when I blip the throttle there is a sound I can only describe as a “click”. You hear when you accelerate and when you lift off the gas. I seems to be coming from the engine compartment, driver’s side, maybe a relay or sensor??

That's an easy one, you need new seals in the by-pass valve in the lower intake manifold. The seals are available from our host, they are cheap & it's an easy D.I.Y. job.

Just wondering, what if you dont change them ? Whats the disadvantage ?

Result is tell-tale "clonk-clonk" sound when you step on the throttle, bad idle, slow boost buildup etc. They are cheap and can be changed in two hours by any home-mechanic like me and you.

The "gaskets" are a plyable waxy material that disintegrate after years of heat and use. As this occurs the engine is digesting the material. Once it is gone the piston hits the housing metal to metal and there is also the likelihood that the piston will become lodged in the bore by pieces of the deteriorated gasket. With no gasket you now have no seal which is a vacuum leak that will manifest itself as a raised idle. All this leads to an ill-performing engine.
Replacing these 2 gaskets is about as easy as changing your oil. Allow a couple hours for the job which should include inspecting everything while the BOV is out and replacing all of your rubber hoses while you are in there.

When you remove the 10mm nuts holding the ends on hold onto it or the spring pressure will launch the piston.
