Talking Gauging interest - Northeast Gathering of Turbo Forum Folks

Just curious about how many people would make the scene for a Turbo forum trackday at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Assume it would have to be scheduled for a weekday (shoot for a Friday as first choice or Monday as second choice). If there is enough interest, I am willing to organize and work with the track to secure a date.

New Jersey Motorsports park in Vineland / Millville. It is South Jersey. They have two circuits, Thunderbolt and Lightning. It is a very nice facility.

In too. I have run on the Lightning with my Mach 1 and thought it would be great with the 930.

The sweet spot is 30-40 people and costs would run approx 300-400 per person (and more tracktime than anyone can handle). I don't expect to get that many from the forum, but if we can get a critical mass of 10 or so turbo guys, its a good base to begin with. If each of us can then get at least 2 additional friends to commit to the date - that's 30 heads right there. Doesn't have to be turbo, doesn't have to be Porsche even. I'm sure that every one of us has a short list of "car guys" that we hang out and drive with.

I've been a part of a grassroots trackday event like this at NJMP for a couple times now and it works very well (assuming everyone keeps their head screwed on straight - and so far that has been the case).

I am in as long as its not too much $$. A friday would be much better for me since I get every other friday off work, and not taking a vacation day would be a real plus.
I figure it should be no more than $150-200 for a one day event. Just got to get enuff people to cover the rental.
I may have another 1 or 2 interested in going but they dont drive 930s. So we could put them thru some sort of hazing ceremony or make them wash all our cars at the end of the event as penance, ha.ha.
Thanks for suggesting Jacob.

Fred

Sorry man I posted this without updating the board site.
Did not see your response on costs.....ouch thats alot of dough for one day....anyway to cut that price?
Like I said I could probably get 2 more in addition to myself to commit.

The way to cut price is to get more people. With 30-40 drivers, you get the opportunity for a ton of track time, it is like the place is your personal playground. More drivers would bring the cost down and there would still be a good amount of track time, the question is how to keep it grassroots and populated by like minded enthusiasts (all of whom share the desire to drive their cars home at the end of the day).

I've been participating in a similar event that happens 2x per year at NJMP. It has grown to over 60 participants by the 5th event, all by word of mouth. All brands of cars, plenty of novices, some experts...common goal to have fun and keep the shiny side up. These track days are very loosely structured as compared to some others I have been to which makes it a lot of fun, but also means the participants have to be self policing to a degree.

Jacob,
How many people would it take to get the price down to $200 per person? Thats the limit that is turning away the people I know from considering going. I would trade a little track time for $$ since usually I have had my fill in one day if I get 2-3 hours of track time in. Thats about 4-6 half hour sessions.
I understand the desire to keep out the riff raff and video game crowd. I dont want some wanna be causing me to wreck my 930 as this is always a worry to me at the open track days I have been to in the past.
I hope this gains steam as I would like to go and meet some of the fellow pelican forum guys at the track.

We have three unqualified "I'm in" responses, and a couple of "maybes"

This is far short of the "critical mass" necessary to get this thing off the ground. With 60 drivers, the cost could be down to around $200. If I promised everyone a $200 price, and did not fill the driver list, then I am out pocket for the shortfall. The idea is for this to be forum friends, and the friends of forum friends. I think it will be difficult to get 60 drivers from this network, especially judging from the response thus far.

This would be a private event, with very little structure other than a quick drivers meeting in the AM where the message is "don't be an @$$hole" then you just drive for the rest of the day. There is more track time and more flexibility than the usual club events (e.g. Take a passenger/friend for some laps, swap cars with a friend to compare, etc.). This kind of freedom comes at a cost, and it also means I need to avoid riff raff or else it becomes demolition derby.

I still want to do something like this, but I am going to ask around my own local gear-head network (offline) to see what sort of committed interest there is. People who commit will need to understand that the final price will be determined by the ultimate number of drivers signed up.
