Anyone smart on 911 turbo engine numbers?
Greetings!
I recently purchased an '89 911 Turbo Cab and it has an engine number stamp of 68K00243. Can anyone tell me what each of these numbers mean? I know the 6 is for a 6-cylinder, but that is where my knowledge ends. The car 1st entered service in December of 1988. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 68K00243 is a K program engine meaning it was produced between 8/88 and 7/89. Engine type is 930/68. It would be a 1989 model.

Very interesting! I'm always looking for more info and while comparing this info to mine came up with a question.
I recently bought a 1979 Euro 930 and my engine # is 6790627. Figuring now 6 = 6 cylinder, 79 = 1979, but the 0627 it ends in i find a bit either odd or coincidental as my VIN # ends in 0626, almost as if it got the next motor on the line? Is this odd or just coincidence? THANKS! J |

I have a 60's GM muscle car that is a true numbers matching vehicle which can easily be confirmed because the VIN is actually stamped into the engine block. Does Porsche use such a system, or is the letter "K" as close as I can get at confirming an engine/vehicle match. I have no reason to believe my car ever had an engine swap . . . this is more for curiosity sake now. Sean |
The 8 indicates it is a U.S. turbo engine. The K indicates the production. The 00243 is the production sequence... it was the 243rd engine in the run.

Yeah I thought about that but figured they wouldn't do that as it screws up everything after that, but then again all they have to do is note that on the build sheet to verify the "matching numbers". Now to figure out how to get that build sheet?? :) |
Interesting thread. To add more info. to the discussion.
I have a 1978 German market car, Vin# 93008700421 my engine is also off by a few digits Engine # 6780428. The numbers match the COA |
So, does anyone know the answer to my question? Is there anyway to positively match an engine to a car in a late 80's 911 turbo? In other words, did Porsche stamp the vehicle VIN anywhere on the engine block? Or is the "K" designation in my engine stamp (which defines the production date range) as close as I can get?

People generally rely on the 'Certificate Of Authenticity' for correct engine, trans. #'s and options for their car. There is debate on their accuracy. I believe a "COA" cost about a $120 now. |
order a COA..it has the numbers for the engine and trans...

How about 67D0412 ? Thanks!

Do you know how to obtain a COA for a euro car? I checked the website for Porsche North America and the COA there is only available for US cars, not ROW :( Thanks! J |

Here is a picture of the COA that came with my European 930. I have never ordered one. I also got a letter 2002 with this COA from PC North America. So at least in 2002 you could still get COA for Euro cars from PCNA. At that time the Phone number was a GA number (770) 290-3500 Good luck, Fritz |
68K00243: 6=six cyl, 8= US - Turbo, K=1989, 243=engine seq # produced.
6780428: 6=six cyl, 7=Turbo (non-US), 8=1978, 428=engine seq # produced |
The engine number on my COA is 12 higher than the car VIN.
Engines do get pulled out of production and sent back to rework, and then sent back to the line to be put in a later car. ( a nightmare scenario for mid year Corvette owners). There is a reasonable chance that 626, or some engine before it, was pulled. |
I would be surprised to see an older 930 where the last digits match the chassis number. This whole "matching numbers" thing is quite recent with Porsches. I have owned a few 930s and a ton of 911s and I do not recall ever seeing a match.
It is great to get a COA and confirm "matching numbers", but with Porsches that simply means it has the same engine it started out with ...but don't think that the COA isn't sometimes incorrect. JR |
