Everything should be stated here. Again, State requirements may be more strict, i.e Euro headlights, emissions. Some Sates don't give a crap. CT only checks emissions if applicable for the year. After 25 ysr they don't even bother. FL has no safety and emissions whatsoever, that is why my 89 Carrera with a 3.3 turbo is registered at my condo in FL. In 2 yrs I can transfer it to CT and not worry about the deleted catalytic converter.

Good luck.

I'll contact PCA, this is pure BS. The car is missing it's paperwork because the last owner, who registered the car in TX, had it for 20+ years.

Not sure why you're having a problem. Perhaps it's because of the model year that gets a red flag, bc '87 was a "legal" year and '84 a "grey" year?
Is it up to the individual state if they want to jerk your chain?
I'll ask my f car friend whose actually an atty, I'm sure he'll know.

Brain B,

Sounds like you have to get paperwork from TX. Maybe the PO can get a copy of his Title and/ or registration. In CT, if the car is 25 y.o all we need is a bill of sale and the vehicle for VIN check. Drive it over we will register it here and then you take it back to your State and transfer it. Maine is even easier. If you need help pm me and I will get you a reference to get it registered in Maine. My town is cracking down on Maine plates because people register their cars there to circumvent the local property taxes on cars!

I'm glad my car came with all of the federalization papers, luckily Texas doesn't care and all i needed was a safety inspecton.

Sorry for derailing this thread, I'll move my rant elsewhere.
Again, the nastygram I received was from the FEDERAL government NOT the state.
Yes my car was flagged when I registered in AL because it is an '85 Euro. Don't know if the Feds put that flag into place or the state.
The feds are demanding the 27 year old paperwork which no longer exists. Texas (where the car was registered for the last 26 years) can't find it, or don't care to find it, and the PO misplaced it years ago.

The original poster for this thread most likely won't have these issues as the paperwork will be generated as part of the process to get the car here. Mine's been here all it's life and the paperwork has been lost.

Importing a Motor Vehicle - CBP.gov

Doing it on your own and not experienced can be a HUGE NIGHTMARE.

Let a professional freight forwarder/broker handle it. They know what to do.

Talking from experience.

Brian, could you register it as a salvage title?
Somewhere in Texas, there has to be paperwork on file on microfilm. They must maitain that record. You may have to hire an atty sorry to say to access the archives.
In retrospect, always be sure the fed papers are in order for any grey mkt car as part of the ppi I suppose.
GL
The OP should have no issue bc of the model year of his car.

Good Old Indiana !!!!!!

Euro 930 I've owned for over 20 years. Never been tested, inspected
or sniffed.

Title to vin ck. and sign off by local cops. 15 min. at the local BMV and
$30.00 for a plate. When I got home I had a $1246 check from the state
for a property tax refund because we had an excess in the coffers.

What a great state to live in.

As I stated earlier, it is doable in NY, however as was suggested a broker is the way to go. They have the experience & know how of doing this. RarlyL8, don't worry about derailing the thread, all the info is pertinent. I do feel for you, it is frustrating to work with the Feds. I feel your biggest problem is the lack of paperwork for your car. Best luck with making it right. Special thanks to wjfk32 for his assist. Looking forward to joining this community. Cheers, Alex

Shouldn't the feds have docs on file for any car that was imported. You'd think they have records that they can pull up by VIN, unless this is one of the grey market cars that slipped through and nevefr really got "Federalized". In that case they will want your car.

There were some cars brought over by svcmen, etc that were never federalized, they had to do it at a ISI center within 12 mo, I'm sure many just fell through the cracks until the next guy tries to register the car, then the state/ins co will light up.
There has to be a microfilm copy in Austin in some buried archive, gonna be a hassle no doubt. But, better than a salvage title.
If there are no papers, that's almost impossible.
Agree, very pertinent info.
