Worried

I have a 86 930. I took it out for a ride this past weekend and was well. Plenty of power/boost, oil pressure, temp and level all good. When I got home i checked the oil level it was a hair low but clean. I put it up on jack stands to fix some oil cooler lines I knew where a little damp and when I took the return line off of the aux t-stat/reg the oil was pitch black, I mean nasty black. As long as I have owned this car the oil never got anywhere near black, I maintain the oil religiously.

So that's telling me the oil is never going up through the aux oil cooler? Is it possible that something is stuck in the t-stat? If one of the oil pumps were bad I would have engine or turbo failure, right? Could it be the t-stat in the engine fault? Is there a easy way to test both of them?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give,
Curt

PS I drove it for a total of about 3 hours 1 hour on the interstate each way 80 - 100mph, like I said oil pressure, temp and level all normal, car ran awesome all day.

For the t-stat, get the engine nice and warm, if stock it should open at 180 deg, grab the oil, lines after the t-stat, if they're warm/hot it's opening.

FYI it takes some time to open if your starting cold. When you feel the return line it go's from cold to hot real fast if the stat is opening. I actually just tested mine this weekend to make sure it was opening.

Thanks for the info guys. My engine seams to level out about 200 - 210 deg F. I would think the aux t-stat should be open by then right?

I also have an 86 930 and it also runs awesome!

My engine runs about 180-190 all the time. I have an auxilary cooler in the nose and a larger turbo with custom exhaust. I hope this is just a thermostat problem. Is your aux line in parallel or series with the stock cooler?

I'm hoping it's just the t-stat also, it almost has to be. As far as I know it's hooked up the way the factory intended. I was in the middle of installing some exhaust when I found this problem. What kind do you have on?
