steering wheel

My recently acquired 1988 Carrera Cabriolet came with an after market Momo steering wheel installed. I really would like to convert back to the original wheel. If anybody is interested in doing a swap, please get back to me.

....dont' know if I answered your message. I am very interested in a trade....pardon my ignorance: what does the 930 steering wheel look like, will it fit my car ?
One of the main reasons I want to change is that some of the gauges are obstructed with the present wheel.
Please advise.

I didn't see the "S" in his post. He is looking for a Carrera wheel, and I pm'd him saying I had a stock 930 wheel. This is the same as a Carrera wheel he is looking for. But maybe I,m not getting the pic! This seems to happen now I"m over 50. Philip

....my apologies, My question was directed to "Zaidigonzo" who offered to trade a 84 930 steering wheel for my Momo. I got the picture of the stock Carrera wheel, just wondering what the 930 wheel he has looks like ?!

Not meaning to interfere but I'm looking for a 930 S wheel - I can't figure out the difference between the OEM and the one Pelican has.

Sorry, but I want to keep my stock '87 wheel in case I want to switch back.

Posts in this thread, as well as many other similar threads in the 911 Forum, explain the differences:

Oh, wow, that thread.

The so-called 930S wheels (a guy on this very forum - my apologies, I forget who/when/which thread) posted a picture of the original steering wheel in his factory 930S - and it didn't have this wheel) are made by Aitwe, in Italy. They're "Typ 32" wheels, with the designation "KBA 70111".

The ones that come from Porsche via Tequipment (the dealer goodies store) as "930S" or "968 CS" wheels are also made by Aitwe, in Italy - and, amazingly, carry the same Aitwe model/part # information on the back of the wheel.

I'm pretty sure that "930S" is marketing hyperbole; but these were original equipment on the 968 Club Sport - they're in PET.

The Aitwe parts were also sold directly as aftermarket wheels known as "Formel" or sometimes "Minneapolis", IIRC. Available in both 36cm (actually measures 355mm) or 33cm sizes (the latter is pretty rare - usually fitted to small hot hatches).

All these wheels require a hub adapter to bolt to any car. They use the stock Aitwe hub adapter (which looks like the Sparco/Momo piece), with the Aitwe 3-screw mounting system. Sure you can guess why by now. The Aitwe eccentric hub spacer is optional.

I've owned 4 of these wheels (and still own 3). Yes, they've all measured exactly the same. I've been assured that I'm incorrect, that the genuine Porsche-supplied part is superior in every way to the Aitwe Formel wheel, that it is smaller/larger depending on your preference, fatter (although it measures the same) and just better/completely different. Right, now where'd I put my tin-foil hat? lol.

Pelican sells the Aitwe wheel here Pelican Parts.com - 930S Steering Wheel

I prefer the smoother grain, shinier leather over the lumpier grain, matt leather. And I personally don't like the ugly seam on the bottom spoke that the Tequipment ones have (or had, think they're NLA). This doesn't make one genuine and the other not - Wayne posted on the topic years ago saying that these are just manufacturing/production variations at Aitwe, and that Aitwe made them all. I think the ones I prefer are actually the older style.

As far as I can see, the only thing a genuine Porsche-supplied wheel gets you is the crest embossed into the leather, as these are not available direct from Aitwe - and even though these wheels were supplied as standard from the factory on the 968 CS and PET lists a part # for a replacement horn pad (yes, they share everything except the hub adapter), no-one ever reported that they got one after ordering them from the dealer... Took me about a year to find rebuild parts for my wheels - but they are available.

Luckily, I don't find I need to check the logo on the steering wheel to know what car I'm driving. I prefer mine plain - but the Aitwe wheels are certainly nice; I took a Momo off to fit mine.
