the poor thing is bleeding....

When I bought the 930 the Porsche dealer told me they used 0W40 Mobile full synthetic. After some research and asking lots of people I was told 15W50 Synthetic would work best for our climate.

However, I called Porsche Vancouver and a very friendly service person explained me I should use 20W50 non-synthetic. A synthetic would make the car leak.

But as a true Dutchmen I did not listen and changed to 15W50 about 2 weeks ago. And guess what, the damn thing is pissing oil all over the place. As far as I can see its the oil return line seals. I ordered some new ones from our host and planning to put them in the next few days.

The big question is do I go for a 20W50 non synthetic which is hard to get here, or for the 0W40 synthetic that did not leak when I got the car. Or trust its only the return seals and all will be ok to use 15W50 Synthetic.

The only 20W50 non synthetic I could find are ether Quaker or Pennzoil. can't find a non synthetic Mobil 1.

I use Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil 20x50 and I don't leak a bit.

Prolly just a old seal, they shouldn't leak regardless of the type of oil used.

Definitely related. Drove it from Boise to Kamloops and after that a return trip to Salt Lake. A good 5000 miles in 3 weeks. Not a single drop. The car was bone dry till THE DAY I changed the oil. I am not talking a drip or 2 a week, but a small puddle every day.

That's what I have heard...

I have heard that this will happen with an older car when you switch from conventional to synthetic oil. They said it would be fine for the engine but to keep an eye on the oil level because it would leak like crazy.

I have used conventional oils in my Porsche since I got it about 15 years ago. I was using 20W-50 Valvoline Racing in my 84 Carrera. I have since switched to Swepco 306 Multi-Grade 15W-40 under the advice of my newer mechanic. The stuff is expensive but when you talking about these engines, oil is not the place to save money.

ZDDP content is supposed to be good in both and, although the ZDDP will shorten the life of your catalytic converter, it will lengthen the life of your engine which is every Porsche owner's goal for the longterm health of the car.

Cheers and good luck with your garage floor!
