EGT probe location?
Hi everyone,
So, like some of the other recent topics lately, I'm planning on installing some gauges in my '87. When I bought the car, it had an analog type TV in it. But I have no use for a TV. ![]() I would much rather put something there I could use. I've already bought an AEM wideband AFR digital gauge. I thinking of also buying AEM Tru-Boost controller digital gauge, an AEM analog volt gauge, and an AEM analog EGT gauge. I'm not 100% sure if I can get four gauges in there yet, I'm still taking measurements. My question is where to install the EGT probe. I have euro style headers. I know it's supposed to be as close to the head as possible, but in what cylinder #? Anybody have any experience and pics with EGT probes?

With my old GSF headers :
![]() With my RARLYL8 headers : ![]() With the RARLYL8 headers, it will be better to use twin EGT probes.

You could try installing them in the threaded ports in each head that were occupied by the air injectors. Typically these are plugged after the injector spider manifold is removed.
This puts the probe right at the exhaust valve in the head but realize that you are only getting a reading for that particular cylinder not the average of all 3 cylinders on that side if you mounted it in the header collector. If I wanted to guess the cylinder representing the highest temps I would say 2 and 5 since they should run the leanest on each bank of three. My reasoning being the leaner the mixture the higher the exhaust gas temps.....(not sure if this is so). Let us know what you do and what temps you see when done. This would be useful info. fred

The best is one EGT probe per cylinder but it means a lot of display... Good for the dyno but not for every days. 1 EGT probe per bank is dangerous because you can have knock in the cylinder #1 and no knock in the cylinders #2 and #3. With the probe in the header collector, near the turbo, you can detect missfire, knock, mixture problem..

Egt
For consistancy we place them 2" from the gasket surface of the exhaust port

I'm planning on a single gauge, with a single probe. I wasn't planning on using it for any real tuning purposes. I had a four cylinder turbo car before this one, and was told it should go in cylinder #4. Is there a certain cylinder I should be putting it into over the others?
