THANKS to all you 930ers
This posting was prompted by a thread started by gsmith660
What happened to politeness on this forum? Then I figured rather than jump on other threads, I should just post it up myself. This is just a message to the folks on this board telling them how much their help is appreciated, and what a great bunch of people lurk here. My bucket list was to get a 911 on the track - well I jumped in deep and settled on a 930 - having never even been in one, or even driven a turbo car before. The short story is I ended up with a buch of crap via a Yahoo auction, that promised much and delivered very little. The list of defects was enough to keep me occupied for about 15 months - torn up clutch, no synchros in g/box, rust on the body freshly painted over, burnt out wiring, jumped relays, fuel issues, non-starting, and when it did it would cut out on me, cracked waste gate (I didn't even know where to find it). You guys all pitched in eager to help and went out of your way posting pics, wiring diagrams, drawing on pics with circles and arrows, sending me parts (all the transactions were A1) etc . I simply could not have contemplated buying the car, let alone get it on the track without your help - I had been on the 911 forum for a while, and saw how great the 930 one was, before taking the plunge. You guys make this old fart very happy, and I love the comraderie that exists here and feel totally bonded to you fine people. The humour is excellent too. So, to all you fine bunch of folks out there - THANK YOU for adding a great chapter in my life, and I continue to enjoy it everytime I log on to this forum, or jump in my car. May the Force be with you all. ![]() I got a camera initially to log data to tune the car - like me and electronics - it took several years to get it going. Here is a link (I posted it on gsmiths thread - so apologies for twice) to some recent footage - all the input to getting this car going, and on the track has come via the 930 and Track forums. You are a great bunch of folks and I really hope to catch up with some of you in person one day - soonish. My racing is just about mainly old farts trying to go faster than they should in cars they once owned or drooled over . Don't be fooled by their looks - under their plastic hoods lies every bit of race tech you can squeeze into the car. My track dog spent 25 yrs on the road, and now 5 yrs on the track - with all the engine internals still original - except for some new rings I put in last year , and cleaned the valves up . AMAZING cars. best to you all manfeild Sept 2012#3.AVI - YouTube Alan

(are you envious of the gear shifts Vas930?).
Alan, the gear ratios are on the list for next year. I should have just waited for the gears to be made and put the bloody things in when I rebuilt the gear box. But, being a fool and freaking out at the thought of missing out on a few track days, I did not. Last time at phillip Island, its such a high speed track it was not an issue. When at Sandown I need those gears big time. I will have the 17s with Dunlop DZO3Gs on for summer. Stuckey Tyre Service - Racing with Dunlop Motorsport since 1972 Should make for some extra grip.

Cole, you crack me up, as usual. But like you, I think my beast will still be in the shed when I croak. I am fairly sure it is going to outlast me. You gave me lots of inspiration when I was having serious dark moments trying to get the thing up and going. Some nights I would come in and ponder what I was going to get for all the bits I had piled up that I used to call a car.
Then I would read your stuff, and get back into it. Vas930 - have you figured how you are going to run both tracks with one set of gears - or are you planning on changing them between tracks:-). Pity you couldn't find any - maybe someone can come up with something this time round. Those tyres look good - but you will see they are a bit limited at 17". I am now at 255/275 - after getting advice from the Track forum guys. I think you are running some good HP - so you can probably use that much rubber. The Nittos have that range - thanks for the tip. All the best for the track. Alan

Toyo also do a 275.
However, the 255 Dunlop has proved to be faster with its softer comp. Not sure how the Nittos stack up against the Dunlops. After talking with Rex Broadbent(targa tas winner) he thinks the dunlop is the go. Will look into the Nittos. What size option do they have for the front? Remember, I drive my car to the track, so must be legal. As for the gears, I will use the short gears on all tracks. Just have to rev the hell out of her on the front straight at Phillip Island.

They are road legal. They got near any size you want for front. I got 255, but they have 235 and I think 245 also.
I had to order Toyo 275 into the country. After waiting about 4 months of "next month', I gave up. We are last on the list for getting this stuff - if the big markets are not out of stock, they ain't gonna make any just for me. So, even if I eventually got them, they are not much use if I have to wait months to replace them. So was really buzzed to find a good stock of Nittos. Seem OK at moment - would prefer bit more track time to see how they fare. But happy at moment. Muuuch better than nothing Alan Hmm, I would like to be on the front straight at Phillip Is. - Stick a zork on if you gonna do that - then I can probably hear it from here.

![]() Nothing like the front straight at Phillip Island. One of the few places I can still pass new GT3s. If they are the same comp as the Toyo they will be harder than the Dunlop. As long as they do what you want, thats great. If you are winning races, all the better. ![]() For those in the US, this is Phillip Island GP track. Enjoy the lap in a GT3.

Alan, I doubt its a lack of gears or balls.
They are in a $250k car, they see some guy in a 32 year old car smoking the tyres while side ways, wearing an open face matt black helmet laughing his ass off, and just move over.

![]() The 930 Turbo....There is no substitute! That goes for this forum as well. I have visit other car forums, the Mercedes one comes to mind, and they are just not frequented like this one. There is quality correspondence but it is not like this forum. It gets checked weekly where this one is a couple of times a day. Keep up the good work fellows!

Alan - did you get the turbo situation sorted? If so, what seems to have been the cause of the leaks? I think I remember reading that the new turbo was rebuilt but started leaking again . . .

Hi Ronnie. Guess what - the puddle leaking stopped after I last posted the problem. My Turbo guy assured me the turbo was fine - after stripping it down and reassembling. Then I got the puddle issue again - as I posted. So, I was going to split the catch tank line and catch the two possible flows of oil each time I used the car - to see where it was coming from.
Guess what - it hasn't done it since. So, I have been pondering this - and here is my best guesstimate at this point. 1) I had twp previous similar turbos on the car, with none of this issue. The turbo that was on the car at purchase - which unlike most of the car was in reasonable condition - shaft play etc. Ran that for about 3 yrs, until it needed a rebuild. At which point I headed for the modified 3ldz, only to run in to this oil leak issue. 2) I put on a 2nd hand 3ldz I had purchased from Chris Toy earlier - as spare. used, but in good cond. No oil leak issues there. 3) Put my rebuilt new m3ldz back on and the oil leak turned up. Again. Only to now go away - hopefully permanently. So, my summary is that the new turbo has the tightest bearing/shaft clearances of all the turbos I have had on the car. I do have the famous 9mm check ball in the line, but by the amount of oil I was puddling there could really only be one source - via that oil line. So I think the clearances were tight enough to allow the oil to siphon past the ball, whereas the earlier turbos had a bit much clearance to do that. This may suggest why the spring has been added to the ball in later cars. That is my guess at this point. So, at the moment I am running the same m3ldz with no issues. Fingers crossed. Regards Alan
