Trackday Oct 5, 2012 - NJ Motorsports Park

Hi folks,

I want to extend an invite to my 'turbo bretheren' to attend a private track event at NJ Motorsports park. The date is Friday, October 5th on the "Lightning" circuit. Catered breakfast and lunch. Event is limited to 50 participants. We will run 3 alternative sessions: 1) Cars with fast drivers 2) Cars with not so fast drivers 3) Motorcycles.

This means you can bring a car and a bike and run both sessions if you choose to.

Cost is $335 (includes PayPal charges). Its a grassroots event organized by a buddy of mine, invitation only and no BS, just lots of track time. Also requires level-headed non A-holes so that we all get to drive our cars home from the track in one piece after a fun and safe day. The organizer has asked me to bring a few of my Porsche friends, so I am looking for a "few good men" (or women) who want to join the fun. This will be my 4th time doing the event and can say that its the best time I have had at the track (other than at Monticello Motor Club).

Please PM me if interested.

bump...

Hi everyone. The organizer of the event informs me we are still a few drivers short of the targeted level. C'mon now, there must be some 930 guys in the metro area on this forum who can represent.

Well that was fun! We had a great day: no incidents, great weather, and some great camaraderie. I got to put exactly 100 miles on my car in a total of 5 sessions for my run group. Sorry I didn't get to meet everyone, but there was some great air-cooled action and a bunch of us had some great back and forth.

I've tracked other cars before but not this one. It's stock suspension and street tires certainly limited it's lap times (as did the nut behind the wheel) but it was very repeatable. I was running anywhere between 1:23-1:25s. You can hear the 16" Kumho Ecsta XS howling through the turns, and they got noticeably looser, but they were very predictable. The car would drift and understeer but it was very discernible when I was at that point. Also, by the end of a session, my oil temp was a bit past 9:00 (but not 10:00), so between tires and oil heating up, it was the just right length of time to be out there.

At the last session, my 14 year old nephew showed up with a go-pro, was able to borrow a helmet and we went around a few times. He put the video up on youtube, unedited, so forgive some of my commentary to him etc. I don't expect anyone to watch the whole thing, but you get the idea of the track and the RarlyL8 headers/exhaust.

Thanks for the hook, Jacob. I'll run with those guys again for sure.

That's a little BMW Z3 M coupe, with race tires. Not only was it nearly as fast as mine down the straights, he could brake later and carry much more corner speed than i could. I slowed and let him by on the small straight and then tried to keep up. In these type of events, if someone is on your tail, whether its the car, the driver, or both- they're faster than you and you should point them by when you can safely do so. Nothing is worse than having someone who thinks they are Gilles Villeneuve holding up a whole line of cars. And there always at least one, you just learn who he is and make sure to line up ahead of him when they call your run group out.

Honestly I don't know the speeds. I know I noticed the little straight is around 100MPH before the bridge, around the lightbulb is 3rd gear at a steady 78-80 (tires howling and car pushing) and then winding out 3rd towards the apex, hitting redline and shifting to 4th right at the exit I was getting 4th to about 4100 RPM down the main straight. At that speed, the center tach is worth a quick peek, but I'm not going to try to decipher the speedometer. Maybe 130?
Serious fun whatever it is!

Ken,

Bummed I missed this. I was stopped by double SNAFU. My dog went into the animal hospital Thursday night, had 3 seizures. I was there until 330am Friday morning.

Other snafu is that my 930 is down for ignition module repair.

Looks like you you had a good day there...glad to hear. It is a great event, very low key. Lightening is an ok circuit, but I think it's a bit boring after a while...only really one left turn, the rest of the time you are turning right.

Those M coupes are fast and cheap to run compared to the 930.

Your 930 video reminds me of driving a 996 gt3, very similar.

Great vid, I was hoping you'd bring that 'boot' back in, with some better rubber I don't think you'd have too many problems, pushing those tyres any harder wouldn't have been safe.
