Why are there so many idiots on the road

So I am taking my 930 to the interior shop yesterday to begin installing the RS interior swap I have been planning for some time. My wife and son are in the car with me.
I am waiting at a red light with about 5 cars ahead of me. I look in my rear view mirror and see a car stopped behind me about 4 feet back. Suddenly I hear a loud crash and my wife told me I said oh sh** as if I knew what was coming. Then it happens my car gets struck in the rear and pushed forward.
I get out of my car and see the girl behind me hystericallly crying in her car and a car behind her with a man getting out. I go over to her to see if she is alright and she says "I am so sorry I hit your beautiful car" I tell her to catch her breath and not to worry it was not her fault. I go to the back of her car and it is totalled. The moron behind her hit her in the back sending her flying into me. I ask him why were you not paying attention he tells me I was paying attention. Well if that was true how did he hit her and at no time did he hit his brakes or beep his horn.
The girl is now out of her car and telling me I was sitting back there admiring your car when out of nowhere someone smashes into the back of me. As we are calling the cops the idiot comes over and says we don't need to call the cops you can take the cars to my friend and he will fix them. Sure no problem I will take my classic Porsche to the friend of the idiot that hit me.
My wife was in the backseat and hit her head on the window and has a huge knot on the back of her head. My neck hurts but luckily my son did not get hurt.
My car has about $3000 worth of damage. Both bumperettes were destroyed the bumper is pushed in and now the muffler is vibrating against it and for some reason the reverse lights stay on.
The adjuster from the idiots insurance company called me today and said he will come tomorrow I have not taken it to my shop yet but he said if they find any additional damage at my shop he will take care of it and adjust the estimate. I told him this is not a Toyota this is a classic Porsche so what seems like nothing quickly adds up to a lot of money. He told me not to worry he has 15 years experience and knows what he is doing. I told him about the bumperettes and I kid you not he said why does your car have 2 rear bumpers. So much for 15 years experience.
Well thanks for letting me tell my story and wish me luck tomorrow. If anyone has any advise for dealing with the adjuster I would be happy to hear it. I have dealt with insurance companies before and we all know it is not a pleasant experience.

Mike,
Sorry for your loss. My advice would be to remove the bumper b4 u attempt to drive the car again. You could have some damage to the engine, turbo and exhaust. There's a lot of business going on in the rear of our cars!

If you have an agent you trust put the claim through your insurance company, he will deal with the other insurance co, keep the 15 year moron out of it. Get adcvice from a fellow New Yorker as well.

Btw, sorry this happened, get yourself your wife, and your kid checked out at the dr and document EVERYTHING! It's amazing what gets screwed up and doesn't manifest for sometimes months later. My wife was in an accident in her tank, a few months later my oldest started walking with a limp, turns out that her back was slightly tweaked, making her walk with one foot out ( like a duck walk). Fricken hmo docs tried to pass it off as a made up growth disorder, went to a good chiropractor and clear as day in the xrays you could see the bend in her spine. A couple of sessions later she was waking normal again - and no problems since. I was a staunch non believer in chiros until he fixed my chronic heartburn (10 years, no cure) with only 2 weeks of adjustments, then this with my kid. Since then I'm a believer!

Mike call your insurance company, I'm sure you have collision coverage, let them deal with it. Cop report made out?
Plus to your original question "why so many idiots?". Bad breeding. JMHO

I would get my own company involved. There is no reason not to. The way I see it, they represent you in this case.
Don't hope or assume anything. Prepare for worst case.

Sorry about the accident. Good thing is everyone is ok. Watch the bump on your wife's head, those can get bad real fast. Same with your neck, it might not be too bad now but it could crop up in the future.

File a claim with your insurance co, when the adjuster calls ask if there is someone who deals or has experience in specialty cars or suggest an outside appraiser. I did this when my 911 was hit and it made it big difference on the outcome. I also did my own research and was armed with information when the time came.

BTW, I'm removing the second rear bumper on my 930 in a effort to save weight; I hope I don't get rear ended! haha

Idiots are everywhere, not just on the road so watch your back.

You weren't clear, but I hope you did call the cops and get a police report. Also, take your family to a doctor, have everyone checked out. I was just telling my wife yesterday that I can't believe how rude and disrespectful people have gotten and that I've noticed a big difference between drivers in the county where I live vs. where I work. Where I work, it seems sport to cut people off, run red lights, and block intersections when the light changes.

Glad you guys are okay and good luck with the insurance.

Get the family taken care of first. Cars can be replaced. neck issues last a LONG time. Been there.

Get them to pull a cell record to see if any texts were sent at the time of the incident. If so, sock it to him. Same for a call log.

Glad to hear that the family is doing OK.

I got rear ended buy a knucklehead some years ago in Dallas in an '87 930. After the crash, which sounds similar in damage, we discovered that the catalytic converter disintegrated on the inside. It would not allow the exhaust to spool the turbine. The idiots insurance wanted to argue and it took a subject matter witness to write a statement to verify that the impact shattered the inside of the exhaust and dumped into the turbine. I believe that he was an engineer with Garretson Turbine that my mechanic at the time knew. That kind of hit does much more to the internals than just body work! Make sure that your mechanic goes through everything because all of the magic sits behind you and a rear end collision is more serious than most of us would imagine.....until it happens to you!

It took me 8 weeks to get that resolved and a lot of hate and discontent with a crooked insurance company (not mine, I have USAA and they worked it hard on my behalf!)

Good luck!

I ride my motorcycle to keep the miles down on my porsches and I sometimes wish I
could be a cop for one day. I would write so many tickets my hand would be crippled.
Texting, putting on makeup, it's just amazing how stupid people are. The big one
that gets me are people following too closely and turning left at a big intersection from
the center lane onto the outer lane all in one turn.Amazing

Thanks for all of the well wishes guys. Yes the police did come and make a report. His insurance finds him totally at fault. The adjuster came and was very nice. Once he saw the car he told me that he would do everything he could to make it right. He did the cosmetic estimate and he told me once the car goes in for repair to have the shop call him back to go over any hidden damge. He wrote on the estimate that he would have to re estimate the car once the mechanic takes off the rear bumper. He kept telling me how he could not believe the car was 25 years old and in such great condition.
He told me to take my time and get everything sorted out right and he would make sure any extras would be paid for no matter when I decided to get it fixed.
Believe it or not I went through this in January with my Cayenne. I was in West Virginia stopped at a stop sign and the idiot in front of me makes a right turn stops and then backs up right into the front of my truck. The car he was driving was a rental. The cop comes and says there is not much damage no need for a report. I tell him this is a Porsche if you snezze on it there will be $1000 in damage. The shop tells the adjuster that they must take it apart for an estimate he says no I will do a perlimenary estimate and then do an additional one when it comes apart. Well after all was said and done almost $7000 worth of damage but they did pay for it so it worked out.
Two accidents this year and I was not even moving in either. I hope these things do not come in threes.

Looks like all good advises mentioned already....I would definitely take family to see a doctor especially your wife. I have been rear ended twice in the past 3 years. Once waiting at a stop light and more recently at the drive-thru window @ Mc Donalds. Whiplash even at 5 mph can causes soft tissue damage. Had to go to Chiro on both occassions to overcome soreness in both neck, back, numbness in fingers. etc.

Check your PIP (personal injury protection) coverage on your auto policy. Usually, coverage is 5K, 10K, etc. This is a separate policy that handles medical expenses, loss wages, etc. This payout is used to determine settlement where injured parties are made whole again....PIP coverage from both parties can be in play. You can PM me if you have any questions! Didn't want to get too long winded...

Hope all is well with your family....Good Luck!
