borrowing 79 911 engine camshaft nut tools
I am in need of the cam nut removal tools for the old style 1979 911/930 camshaft style. Its the big 46mm crows foot and the camshaft holding socket that I wanted to borrow or rent from one of the lucky few that own these tools.
I will need it for about a month max. I got the engine out of the car yesterday but need to hang onto the tools after I disassemble the top end while I wait for the replacement parts to come in once I find out whats damaged and then need time with the reassembly. ----- Anyone could help me out or lead me to someone that has these 2 tools and would not mind loaning them to me for a short time? Please PM me if you can help me. I am posting on the engine rebuild forum as well. Really appreciate it. Thanks, Fred

Jacob,
Hey man, thanks so much. I really appreciate this. ------You are a gentlemen and a scholar, a fine judge of wine and women! I will look for your email message when I get home tonight so I can give you the mailing address to my place. It looks like I damaged the number 5 piston rings or JE piston. Got 55psi compression in that cylinder. Turns out Thunderbolt raceway was an expensive DE that day after all. I will know better what happened once I get the engine apart. Talk later, Fred

I still have a set too, should Jacob come up empty handed (which could happen to me too, since I haven't used them in over 20 years on my old...and first....1973 911 Targa). Often times thought of selling them, but hey - you never know when I or some else might need them.

Now I am back into another rebuild.....go figure. From what I have found these tools are hard to find even for purschase now. The later camshaft bolt design from Porsche 1981? makes more sense. Fred

Quick update:
Jacob had the tools delivered by last weekend. Real fast and awesome. So far half the engine is torn down and the pistons and rings are damaged on 2 cylinders. It aint making me happy. The one cylinder looks badly scored as well, but I dont know if this can be repaired and replated since its a Nickie cylinder. I have to contact LN engineering to ask. Looks like I am in for a long haul while I wait on new parts and time to gather everything I need together before I can rebuild this thing. Gotta get another job too to pay for all this crap. Later, Fred

Damn Fred. That blows. So it looks like detonation?
Couple questions: Are you twin plug? Ignition system? Timing specs? Have you ever checked fuel flow of your CIS? Thinking about the uniformity of fuel delivery between cylinders.

Just wanted to say thaks to all you guys that offered to let me borrow tools for this repair.
Thanks alot Jacob for being so patient as I borrowed these for an extended period. You should see a little box from the USPS in a day or so with the goods inside. Detonation was ignition related apparently so I have upgraded to an MSD 6al2 programmable unit. I locked down the dizzy and will allow for computer control of the ignition curve this time forward. Still single plug and running flow tested injectors from last go around. I have the added benefit of the Euro fuel head and lines which came stock with the 79 MY. Once I can get the engine installed in the car I can run it and dial in the AF ratios and ignition timing. For a start I will be simulating the stock ignition advance curves from the owners manual and then tweak the MSD from there. Also want to thank my beautiful wife for not castrating me in the middle of the nite for spending so much money and time out in the garage on this thing. This better work this time around.......ha,ha. fred
