WaveTrac Differential?
I'm in need of a differential and I'm looking at what options are available out there.
Anyone has any experience with this brand of differential? WaveTrac Differential. The price for this one new is $1,295.00 Another one I came across is the KAAZ G50 Limited Slip Differentials $1,695.00 Porsche 911 G50 Quaife ATB Helical LSD Differential $1866.77 |
I've never used a Wavetrac in a Porsche but I had one in my 240SX and it worked great. It was the ideal LSD for the street and track use.
KAAZ is a clutch plate design so it'll be the most aggressive locking but also will require maintenance. I would use this one if you are serious about track days but it's not the best for the street. Quaife is a great street diff as well and wont need any maintenance. |
I'm currently running a Wavetrac but have less than a year with it and only one AX event. Seems to work well so far.

thank you guys!
|
I doubt any guys here are putting their diffs through the torture you are Juan! Wouldn't Eddie be the best person to ask or is he in 997 land now?!
|
Further inspection revealed that the ring and pinion is what appears to be bad, I'll know more once we open the gear box.
|
Quaif is too weak for what you are planning on using it for. They were very popular for a while in racing but they fail sometimes in high HP applications so a lot of people were swtching over to guard. I know Eddie was using a guard diff and also gear sets. But thats been two years now since we were all at that car show together. A Guard is way more expensive but pretty much idestructible.

LOL, I went from burning one tire to a burned clutch with the Wavetrac.
|
Not sure what the hp they considered high but it was a lot of cars that were being tracked both drag racing and road racing. I looked into it in about 06 when i was still putting my car together the first time. Someone here or on rennlist had seen a lot of them come into their shop broken and were upgrading to a guard. So i looked into getting a guard and it was out of my price range. and every time since i have considered getting one the price has went up more always keeping it just out of my reach.

What would be more representative would be the numerous cars built by the likes of Evoms, Champion, 9ff, Ruf Germany and many many others who have out them in 800-1200 whp cars. Like the other companies mentioned we do also make a torque biasing gear driven differential. I don't recommend putting them into cars that are over 500 whp. I can't speak to the strength of anyone else's TBD but the weak link on a TBD is the planetary gears and none of the others mentioned make gears that are larger than ours. Draw your own conclusions about what you think they can take. Regards Matt Monson Guard Transmission llc |

As we speak, I just ordered a Guard replacement clutch pack for my factory ZF limited slip diff.
I've been assured that it is a nice upgrade over the stock ZF internals, hopefully the parts will arrive on Friday? But since my ZF limited slip has been operating as an open diff for a couple of months, anything will be an improvment! Mark |

I had a 40/65 Gripper configured around 70 ft/lbs fitted to my 915 and loved it. The single best mod I made to the car.
So no going back to open diff for me. But Gripper don't list a unit for the G50. I didn't even consider TBD's; decel lockup when you back off is a truly wonderful thing. I researched everything I could find about the Wavetrac, KAAZ and OS Gikken LSDs, including reviews, comparisons, track testing & timings, and experiences folks had with them in all applications. There's a lot out there. I just did not get the warm fuzzy feelings that I was hoping for. In comparison, opinions of the GT were very consistent. Discussed it with Matt and ordered a GT configured the same as my previous LSD. I'm very happy with it so far. |
I've got a WaveTrac installed in my 3.2 turbo and have nothing but positive comments regarding street and track use!

Group buy? |
Wow, can't believe I forgot to post after I installed the Guard clutch pack into my ZF diff.
Works like a charm, hooks better at the exit of corners, the rear end no longer get twitchy coming hard into a corner apex while downshifting & on the brakes. A marked improvement over the stock internals. Thank you Monty & Guard. Mark |
What's involved in servicing or swapping the diff on a 930 box? Does it require removal of the transmission, or is there a way to tackle it in place?

Good question. I bought a used quaif that I'll install this summer. Wondering if it's possible to do so without having to reset the pinion. As long as crown to side bearing is accounted for along with preload I don't see why not, but I'm not an expert, just a hack. |
The actual removal & reinstallation of the diff. can be done with the engine & trans in the car.
However, since the new diff carrier and new carrier bearings will undoubtedly be slightly different in size from what you have in there now. You will need to at least check the ring & pinion gear engagement tolerances. I cannot see how any needed adjustment there, can be done with everything in the car. Pretty sure this can only be done correctly with the trans sitting on a bench. Ring and pinion adjustment is accomplished by adding or subtracting shims between the carrier body and the carrier bearings inner races. You bolt it all togehter, measure what you have, calculate what is needed to obtain the correct running toleraces, take everything apart, install the corresponding shims that you calculated are needed. then reassemble. I changed out new carrier bearings only, many miles ago when I rebuilt me tranny. I checked the running tolerances, and got lucky and they where within factory range. Others may not get this lucky, and I seriously doubt, anybody would get this lucky with a completely new carrier housing. My .02 worth. Mark |
Hello,
Mark is right. To reset the ring gear backlash and bearing preload with the installation of a different differential requires that the gearbox we on a stand and not in the car. Some people take their chances and put the two differentials on a flat surface, measure the bearing locations on each, guesstimate the shim thicknesses and just go for it. If you screw it up, it's only going to cost you a new ring and pinion... |
Juan, I think Kevin here at KMW has a used G50 posi unit if you just want a replacement
