1979 930 for sale on the Samba

TheSamba.com :: VW Classifieds - 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo Sunroof Coupe

Not much info, seems priced right.

No affiliation, etc, etc.

Virtually any used car is the proverbial pig-in-a-poke so if you have decent wrenching skills, taking your chances on a cheap one can make for a good deal. At an asking price of $26.5K chances are good it an be bought somewhere south oh that. Assuming of course, you get there in time ...

look at the pic of the rt front winshield. i dont like the way the rubber sits in the channel and look at the rain gutter. looks like it has been hit.

the motor has been replaced. the case has no numbers on it. no paper work on who did the motor or when. he claims it is a factory replacement motor.

he also has an 86(7). looks nice except the motor and tranny need to be re-sealed. and he is still asking 36k.

Exterior looks Ok but look at the engine compartment and the trunk area looks pretty ratty from the pics I see.

I thought the tea-tray tail was only on later turbos?

I'm willing to bet a PPI would be scarier than Saw II. It's very rare to find a dealer who knows these cars and bought it with a stack of records.

The tea-tray began in 1978 with the intercooled 3.3l engine.

That is a fantastic color -- any idea what it's called and what years it was available on? Has anybody checked up on this car?

Their 86/87 is priced at 39.5 ask (not 36?) and seems pretty clean.

Looks like standard Meteor Gray Metallic to me. Specifically, I think it looks darker due to the image, not the paint. You never know until you have the code...

The dealership guy was very honest and forthcoming with the details...I should revise what I said earlier -- the car is a 'basket case' for *me*:

- engine is non-original; no replacement date is known (although it is a 930 engine replacement);

- only service records are at 1000 miles (in 1979) and at 56K miles (in 2002); the car has 65K miles now;

- paint is a poor respray and the dealership guy described it as an acceptable 10-footer; there are areas where the original (black) color is showing underneath and places where the paint is uneven;

- interior is mostly shot; all seats need to be redone; original steering wheel is not available;

- lots of little parts missing; I don't think it's essential but shows how the car had been taken care of;

- one of the fenders (right rear?) has been cracked? and is filled with bondo.

That's what I can remember. Like I said the guys were very honest with the car needing TLC.

he claims it is a porsche factory motor because it has no numbers on the case. i dont think he has paper work to back up who built it or where it came from. just means the case had to be replaced for some reason.

look how the window gasket fits. either it is the wrong gasket or it has been hit.

they are asking 26 but you dont know what it sells for.

when i was very young i bought a 914. the chrome on the drivers side A pilar was not staying down. when i pulled it off, the windshield was sticking up above the body only on that side. it took me a while to realize the drivers side had been hit pretty bad. then i found where they had "proter powered (?)" the inside of the frame back out. i also nver could get the left front camber to line up. hey, i was young and dumb, now i am just older.
