Broken head stud. Top end rebuild time.

I just have been notified by my P mechanic that I have a broke head stud on clyinder # 6 top front so looks like I'll have to have the top end rebuilt. My wrench told me the guy he used in the past to re build heads is now retired. So my question is who is a good head re builder on the East coast? Has anyone used a shop that did a good job and charged a fair price? Need new guides and seats re cut and springs re shimmed to correct height or what ever else is needed.

Anchor Atlantic in NJ
Xtreme Cylinder Heads in FL
JB Racing in FL
Craig Garr, G2 Performance in Michigan (CGarr on the board)

All good choices.

Well now, that's all really handy if you live east of the muddy Mississippi. Just in case you guys aren't aware, there's a substantial population living "out West" where we off'ed the resident indians and traded our log cabins for Frank Loyd Wright architecture and high rise office buildings.

Any good head builders on the West Coast? Just askin', not needin'.

Thanks guys. I think I have enough East Coast ;) shops to work with. I'm surprised how much the price varies.

Learned something from the engine rebuild. Cam timing was a little bit off.... One side was 1.85mm other side was 2.35mm. That explains the poor performance! I guess the wrench who set the timing up on the last rebuild needs to learn how to do it right. Hoping I see a noticeable performance change with the proper timing.

R&L Engines in Dover, NH is near you, and first rate.

Mark,

I used Cgarr and just shipped the heads to him. In addition to a rebuild he twin plugged them also. In spite of the added expense of shipping I would use him again. Easy to get a hold of and decent turn around time, obviously I was happy with the work.

I was steered to Exotech in Plaistow, NH as they're local to me. Lots of experience over there, dropped my parts on Friday. My broken stud was cyl 5...

And this included what exactly? Can you provide a break-down?

Check heads for cracks, Replace guides, re-cut valve seats, re-surface valves and sand-blast and assemble with new seals.

Even with the added cost of shipping "cgarr" your heads, you'll still be miles ahead in price and service if you use him.

His prices are unbelievable.
