Removing alternator ?
 

Is there a secret to this? I got it all loosened off but cant seem to wiggle it out. Its hitting the "cross mount" , and the fins inside are long and annoying ! Im trying to get a few pieces Powder coated. 89 930.

Glad to see its not just me, that powder coats parts on his 930.

You have to take the air foil cone off the back of the alternator in order to remove the alternator/fan housing. This is fairly tricky as it is attached by three small nuts that are somewhat difficult to see, reach and handle (easy to drop them, too).

Thank-you, i was reading the one for the 911 not the 930....... 911 is different.

Benny, take good notes or a digital picture for the wiring. Getting it wrong can be very expensive. And clean all of the electrical ring connectors before you reinstall it. You probably have heard it already, but powder coating the fan tips can cause the fan to begin to rub the now powder-coated housing,
Last thing is to search for John Walker's methods to remove the alternator from the housing and the fan from the alternator if you have any trouble and before you break something. GL

It's been 10 years or so, but if my failing memory is somewhat correct.....when you loosen/remove the large flat fan shroud strap, you will then be able to move the alternator and housing around a bit as you have found out, but next you need to remove the ground strap, this will allow you to more freely move/rotate the alternator so you can then begin removing the small 8mm nuts (IIRC) that attach the fiberglass cone, with the air direction fins. Once the cone has been removed, you can remove the electrical connections on the rear of the alternator then you can remove. Remember though, the cone with the air direction fins must go on in only one direction/orientation, so make sure you look closely before removing....

Last year I swapped out my alternator. I had eery bolt removed, and I still couldn't squish the alternator out of the fan housing despite using wooden blocks and careful thwacks with a mallet. In the end, I brought the assembly to my mechanic and his shop used a drill press to exchange it out for a rebuilt one for me. (I would have brought the old alternator into them to rebuild/swap anyway.)

Just finished replacing a bad alternator on our 911, and decided to take the powder coating route. Red for the fan cage, silver for the fan, black for the pulley and retaining ring. The end result is very nice, BUT - pay very careful attention to the fitting of the cone, take pictures, especially of the wiring, take your time, and most importantly, check the fit of all the parts before installing them in the car.

On our fan cage, the powder coat inside the ring where the alternator seats needed to be removed, and I also took a bit off the fan blade tips to make sure it cleared the sides of the cage.

FWIW, you can remove the fan w/o removing the alternator.

Are we sure you can remove the fan w/o removing the outer shroud?
Reason is i am still waiting on the fan and would like to put the silver shroud back with the alternator.
Is there enough space on a 89?

In theory, absolutely. May need a "puller" tool, as sometimes the fan is "frozen" on. In extreme cases you may have to R&R shroud....

Edit: Wait, you are talking about INSTALLING the shroud and alt without the fan? I always install alt and shroud, secure it, then install the fan.
