91 Turbo Delete the ABS??
I have a 91 Turbo that I am backdating to look like a 73 RSR. I am lightening everything. I want to get rid of the ABS equipment but my builder says that the brake booster is part of it??? Has anyone ever upgraded to a different master cylinder and deleted the ABS equipment? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Tate |
It would make as much sense to delete the electric starter.

Ah.. You are obviously not a purist. I am somewhat old school... I have driven many 911's without abs..and like them that way...good idea with the starter though... Might get rid of it as well. T

I think you would have to change everything in the system and backdate to a 930 setup, not worth it imo.

For less skilled drivers it's a good safety feature especially in the rain. If you can just turn it on or off by flicking a switch like in many new high performance cars then that would be nice. |

Sorry...purist was not the correct word..... I am looking for simplicity and light weight... I. E. we have already taken the power windows out and replaced them with manual winders. I just wanted to see if anyone had attempted to remove the abs system. Jfairman....you get where I am going with this build. Thanks.

The way these cars are build, it is way too difficult to adapt a kick starter. If you do decide on going that route, beware the choice of mufflers are going to be very limited. Also make sure your ignition timing has got a kick starter mode, if not it'll send you flying to the moon, with knees bend like a chickens. If this happens you probably want to install a triptronic. Yes, I used to own a Harley :) and what do you expect on a Sunday morning. :) Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. |
Tate, sounds like a cool project.
The ABS on the 964 is the first generation type, so you can feel when it is intervening. In 6 years with my 964 Turbo, the ABS has never kicked in to rescue me so for me it's like it not even there. Some of the track-orientated owners over on Rennlist have just removed the hydraulic pump and re-plumed the caliper lines to run directly from the master cylinder. If you do a search on Rennlist there are about 10 threads on this subject. |
As you can't drill an ABS system...
I would not fear of removing. I agree with poor brake feel at 1st gen systems. Only Motorcycles had bader ones that time... |
It is your car. If you want to put antlers on it, and drive it to the north pole do it. I was looking to drop the ABS on my 964 turbo for weight reasons so I am curious to the exact weight loss

I removed it from my 95 993 - 930 wannabe. Light and simple, but reflecting back it didn't really save much weight, just the pump unit. Also, if the 965 is anything like the 993 it also uses a wheel speed sensor to feed the speedometer via the ABS computer. No way to drive the speedo without the computer remaining in place unless you rig up another way to drive an older pre 89 speedo. I had to do this once with a magnet ring behind a CV joint and p/u so I could drive an electronic speedo from an old mech drive transaxle.
I hear the 965 has a different brake system with some sort of pressure accumulator. Not sure how those work, or if there is any connection to the ABS system like your mech told you. |
I've seen 964 guys pull the ABS relay for track driving....when they head home..they put the relay back in. ABS doesn't belong on a racecar..unless it's being driven to starbucks..my $0.02

Can anyone verify if this will interfere with the speedo on a 91 964 turbo? I could not find all the threads on rennlist. Does anyone know of any good posts where other people have done this?
