That omega spring is like one of those crazy mind puzzles where you somehow slip a ring off two horseshoes. . I can take as many pictures as I want but I end up just looking at it, flipping it around 12 ways, and the suddenly there is an oh yeah moment. I'd love to meet the guy that invented it.
It can't just be me, can it?

I have to agree. I made sure I took lots of pictures. I'm still sweating about putting this back together.

Hey John,

Thanks for all the pics, I'm about to drop my 3.2 engine & trans and this helps a lot.
Now that you've experienced it would you say that one does need to drop the rear sheet metal as you did? Did you pull the engine with the trans still attached? I wasn't for sure by the pics.

Hi Kevin

I believe it helped to drop the rear bumper and valance, otherwise my jackstands would have been 6" higher. Bumper and rear valance was very easy to remove. Tranny was dropped with the engine attached. One thing I would recommend, is to have 2 furniture carts. One under the tranny and one under the engine. It will make moving the engine around much easier. My garage floor was not the smoothiest.

Glad the pictures helped.

John

Great write up, I've been waiting for something like this for a while. I bought the turbo manuals looking for a step by step walk through and all it said was "remove engine".
One of the first questions I asked the PP brain trust was what kinda transmission I had in my 87 930. I was thinking a following number to the 915, I got 1 reply "you have an 87,930,4 speed". Thanks but I kinda knew that already, it was a couple of months later that I read that's what the tranny is called, I got a chuckle outta that, and your right, this is a great place for info.
Some of the pic's you posted about the connections had me a bit confused, I couldn't recognize where the connectors were but with your pic and looking at my car I think I have it now. I feel way better about the job anyway after reading this.
I've got some tranny grief too, that's why I need to drop my engine, how many miles on your trans?

Finn

67000 Kms. Had a 3rd gear grind. Parts ended up cost me around $1600 for tranny rebuild.
Basically replaced 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gear synchros. Some brake bands, dog teeth, and gasket kit.
Just waiting for the parts to arrive. I ordered them from Pelican last week.
I'm also sorting out various oil leaks while I'm in there. I have had a great experience so far, discovered that all my head studs are intact. I was worried about that. I have owned the car approximately a year. Pelican is a great resource, for information.

Getting ready to replace the rear flywheel seal. Remove flywheel plate.
I fabbed up a locking plate. Part of my Pelican package included the 3 point 12mm flywheel bolt socket. Bolts came out fairly easy. Remove plate. Leaky rear seal.
Time for a cleanup.

What is best way to remove the existing seal? Should the seal be installed dry? Or CurilT around outer edge? Oil on inner edge? What is torque spec on flywheel bolts? 66 ft-lbs.? Crisscross pattern. In 3 increments, or is 2 fine?

Tranny Back from Mark Henry. Hope to get it installed this week. Engine cleaned up.
Still have to put engine tin back on, turbo, and reinstall the injectors.
Currently cleaning the injectors in Seafoam. Have pintals tied open with copper wire.
Plan on backflowing them. It's amazing how much gunk is coming out since I opened pintals. Had previously soaked for 3 days, hardly any gunk.
I can't wait to get the car back on the road.

Also need to turn my attention to the engine bay. I have a new firewall mat.
Bought some 3m spray adhesive. Plan on painting some of the engine bay.
Not sure what to do about AC lines. I don't plan on using AC until next year.
Guess that's another thing to add to the list. How expensive are these lines?
Should they be reaplaced due to age?

Time can be a killer on stuff like the AC hoses but if you go to an AC shop you should be able to get the proper fittings to pressure test the lines at home, pressurize to ?? psi, close the system and wait to see if there is a drop in the pressure/leaks. Having those fittings is a good idea so you can cap the lines until your ready to use them again.

Engine back together. Did a test fit on the tranny today. Tranny was binding up a little on bottom stud. I'll post some more pics tomorrow
