f***ing relais and all the oldschool electrical crap
Sorry for venting, but first the relais in the engine comp. was toast, exchanged it, everything back to normal and the car starts and runs fine. This morning on the way to wash the car it wouldnt start yet again.

bridged the engine bay relais, no change (its red on 3.0 turbos). Bridged the 2nd relais for the fuel pump in the front, engine jumps to start right away. even switched the relais in the front around, no change, car doesnt start/run without bridging the number 2 pump relais! Why?

AND with a bridged relais at idle it revs from 900 to 1100 rpm back and forth, and doesnt develop any power in gear, but revs up fine without a gear in.

I was really happy the car ran well again and I fixed it myself by locating the relais as the issue, but doubting I really am capable to fix this myself this time, because every time it works, it suddenly develops a new issue - frustrating:(

Welcome to relay hell. Pull the fuel pump fuses and clean them and their sockets. This seems to have worked for me. I had also replaced both red relays trying to fix my car.
I cleaned all the fuses while I was at it.
I still need a few more test drives to be comfortable that its going to start every time.

You were right, Dennis. The fuse was broken (!), not blown... AND I had a vacuum leak. Jesus. Will probably exchange all hoses, fuses, everything that loses out after 35 years...

but car runs like a champ again.

The fuse was broken (!),
You might want to use two fuses instead of one (1 for each pump) for better reliability Simon. Thread on how to do it is here.
