Tach needle stops as outside temp increases

My tach works flawlessly until the outside temp reaches about 80 degrees and then the needle will rev to 5K but will not go beyond this point... when revs fall below this point the needle shows the correct RPM... Since it is heat related is it the needle within the dial face ( heat deflection/ warping ) or is it possibly electronics driving the needle? Ideas please and thanks.

It can be both. The materials can warp with heat causing mechanical interferance and the aging electronics can also malfunction when the cockpit temp spikes. Typically once you are traveling down the road and air is moving through the cockpit the needle will unfreeze.
To determine which it is you can carefully remove the glass.

My '87 is doing the same thing. I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot it yet but I'm leaning towards interference with the glass.

My '79 had a sticky tach needle and it was this^^

I disassembled the unit, flipped the lens over and reassembled...problem hasn't returned in years.
