Door handle installation

I am re fitting the drivers door handle and am having problems being able to lock the door with the key.
My door lock plate only has one finger is this correct?
I am thinking this should have two fingers so the lock lever rotates between the fingers to lock or unlock the door.
I have not found any broken parts and the lock did work before i removed it. So is it possible i am not setting the door lock correctly.
The car has central locking and is a 1988 Targa Turbo.

Thanks in advance

TIM

Thought i would update what i found on my subject. Firstly trying to lock and unlock the door with it open doesn't work. School boy error. Door needs to be closed to actuate the mechanism.
My install is of course for central locking version and only has one finger compared to the PET which shows two fingers which is possibly related to mechanical locks only.
My main issue was the micro switch on the lock barrel had failed.
Since replacing and reinstalling the lock the system works fine.

After 18+ years of VWs this still burns me occasionally when doing lock/handle work. No shame.
