Need Help: My car will not stop running
Hi all,
My car 1987 930 turbo will not stop running even after i remove the key? I stall it in first gear to shut 'er down. What is my problem ? Regards, Falnaim |
Could be the ignition delay relay has decided to delay forever. It's on the rear relay panel next to the rear window defroster relay.
Might be the ignition switch gone wrong but I doubt it. First I'd try unplugging the ignition delay relay while it's keeps running after you've turned off the ignition at the key, and see if it stops. If thats it you can bypass it and have a nicer and little bit more reliable car to drive. To do that remove the relay and connect the two wires together closest to the engine fan and tape over the the other two wires and leave it... unless you like the annoying run crap it's designed to do. |
Is it running smoothly and can take normal throttle as though you never shut off the key? Or is it dieseling?
|
Yes the car is running perfectly and smoothly my only problem that's it's not turning of when I switch off the key !!!

Some times it shut down after 5 or 10 min.
And sum times the head lights turns on alone even when the switch is in the off position and what I'm doing this situation I pol the head light switch on the off agin then it turn off Quote:

+1 on the ignition delay relay. I had the same issue bypassed it and fixed the problem.

Thanks, I will try to do it tomorrow.

had a similar problem in my 1980 930, car would run for a good 15-20 seconds after i pulled the key, sometimes i would stall the car out,...
replaced my fuel accumulator and filter....and all good since |
If everything is proper, the fuel pumps should be shut off when the key is turned off, so the car cannot possibly run "normal" for any length of time, after you turn the key off. There is more going wrong than simply the the ignition delay relay.
The whole point of the relay, is to burn off the fuel/pressure that is in the system past the accumulator, so the injectors do not leak down into the cylinders when the car is shut off. Mark |
There's something more to it and I'm not an electrician so I can't explain it.. all I can say is it's weird.
A couple years ago I experimented with bypassing the ignition delay relay because I was tired of the annoying dieseling run on it made happen when I turned off the ignition key. I used a spst toggle switch hooked up to the two right side wires on the bottom of the relay while leaving the two left side wires on the relay in place. When I switched the toggle switch one way the car wouldn't start. Then after switching the toggle switch back I started the car normally and then with the switch toggled back again the car would keep running after I turned the key off and removed it from the ignition switch. That was a weird surprise. I don't know why but thats what happened and I did it in front of a friend who also has an '87 930 to prove it. That tells me that if part of that ignition delay relay shorts out or freezes in position and does the same thing internally that I did with the toggle switch jumping the two right side wires on the bottom of it while leaving the two left side wires in place then that may be what his relay is doing on it's own. Who knows, and I don't know what that did to the fuel pump relay ground circuit and kept my fuel pumps running but it did. Another real possibility... Take a look at how that relay is installed on that aluminum panel. The 4 wires on the bottom of the relay are connectd by spade terminals going through a rectangular hole in the aluminum panel right under the relay that is attached to the upper side of the panel with one screw. It's possible to swing or bend that relay back and forth in any direction and if you bend it towards the engine fan side the male pins on the bottom of the relay can short out on the aluminum panel and do exactly what the toggle switch I mentioned above did and the result would be a motor that will not shut off when the ignition key is turned off and removed. The origonal poster should check that out and make sure the pins on the bottom of the relay are not touching the aluminum panel and try moving it a little to see if it corrects the problem. Quote:

Bad alternator light diode.,check it out, it might solve your problem.

There's a current thread on the technical forum about this same kind of issue. Maybe it will help...
